Tipsarevic was involved in two tight sets against Seppi on Tuesday

Andy Murray will play Janko Tipsarevic in the second round of the Dubai Championships after the Serbian beat Italy's Andreas Seppi 7-6 (7-4) 7-5.

Tipsarevic, currently ranked 39th in the world, advanced along with seeded players Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Marin Cilic and Nikolay Davydenko.

Murray, who beat Russia's Igor Kunitsyn in the first round, will take on Tipsarevic at 1500 GMT on Wednesday.

The Briton is the second-highest ranked player in Dubai behind Novak Djokovic.

Switzerland's world number one Roger Federer pulled out of the tournament in the United Arab Emirates on Sunday with a lung infection.

Murray has a 3-2 record against Tipsarevic, their last meeting coming on clay in last year's French Open third round when the Serb retired injured.

Fourth seed Davydenko said he was battling a sore left wrist after dropping the first set before coming though 6-7 (5-7) 6-4 6-1 against Florent Serra of France.

The Russian said his wrist was still hurting after falling on it during the Rotterdam semi-finals two weekends ago.

"I thought I broke it," he said. "I had swelling for three days. I could not touch anything with my left wrist. I did not know if I would play here, which is the reason I requested a Tuesday start.

"It still hurts, but I hope it's not a big problem and I can play here and the Davis Cup."

Tsonga advanced when Michael Llodra retired from the all-French match after dropping the first set 7-6 (11-9).

Both players were battling illness, and Tsonga said he was close to withdrawing before Llodra pulled out.

"It was difficult because I was a bit sick as well," he said. "With the travel from Marseille, it's really tough today. But I won. He stopped before me, so I will continue and I hope I will feel better tomorrow."

Sixth seed Cilic, the winner of ATP titles in Chennai and Zagreb already this year, defeated Arnaud Clement of France 6-2 6-4.

The other winners on Tuesday were Tommy Robredo of Spain, German duo Bjorn Phau and Michael Berrer, and Somdev Devvarman of India.
