Louk Sorensen has broken new ground for Irish tennis in Australia this week |
Ireland's Louk Sorensen saw his groundbreaking run at the Australian Open come to an end with defeat by American 33rd seed John Isner. Sorensen, 25, became the first Irish player to reach the second round of a Grand Slam in the Open era when he beat Lu Yen-Hsun on Tuesday. But Isner proved too strong a day later, winning 6-3 7-6 (7-4) 7-5 on a packed Court Eight. The American will play Frenchman Gael Monfils in the next round. Sorensen, 25, had already done what no other Irish tennis player had managed since Matt Doyle back in 1985 when he made it through the qualifying event. He was raised in Germany and although his parents now live in Dublin, Sorensen remains in Stuttgart, training and playing in the German tennis league's third division.
