Watson nearly took a straight sets victory but lost the tie-break |
Guernsey's Heather Watson put in one of the performances of her career before losing to world number 133 Valerie Tetreault in a senior event in Canada. The 17-year-old US Open girls' singles champion, ranked 736 in the world, came through qualifying to reach the first round at the Saguenay ITF tournament. Watson took the first set but lost the second in a tie-break as she eventually fell 5-7 7-6 (7-5) 7-5 to the Canadian. The ITF Women's Circuit is the level below the WTA Tour. And Watson can take a lot of confidence from her performance after taking 18 games off a player more than 600 places above her in the world rankings.
