Serena Williams put her controversial US Open singles exit behind her by winning the women's doubles title with sister Venus at Flushing Meadows.

Serena was knocked out of the singles by Kim Clijsters on Sunday after conceding a point penalty on match point for abusing a line judge.

But the American put the incident to one side to defeat top seeds Cara Black and Liezel Huber 6-2 6-2 in 89 minutes.

Before the doubles final Serena issued an apology to the official she abused.

It was an amendment of her previous statement in which she had pointedly claimed not to have made any such gesture.

Venus and Serena hit the ground running and dominated throughout - Zimbabwe's Black failing to win a game on serve and she and her American partner Huber winning only two points on their second serves.

It was their 10th doubles career Grand Slam title together and third of the year, following success at the Australian Open and Wimbledon.

"It was definitely exciting, congratulations to our opponents, and I would like to thank my fans for everything," said Serena following her victory.

"I really love you guys and I don't ever want to have a bad image for you guys.

"You fans are my number one and I love playing here in New York."

When ESPN2's on-court interviewer Patrick McEnroe gave her an opening to reiterate her apology, Serena said: "I think I said it all."

When McEnroe pursued the issue, fans booed and Venus interjected: "What I think the crowd is saying is, 'Patrick, let's move on'."

The Williams sisters picked up £253,000 between them after their victory which will go some way towards paying the £6,000 fine Serena received as well as softening the blow of potentially losing her £210,000 prize money for reaching the singles semi-final as punishment for her behaviour.
