Fleming played in this year's loss to Ukraine in Glasgow |
Colin Fleming has been called up to join Great Britain's Davis Cup team for this month's play-off with Poland. The Scot replaces Josh Goodall, who has been struggling with illness. World number two Andy Murray pledged his commitment to the team last month but has since picked up a wrist injury at the US Open and may be a doubt. Britain needs a strong team in Liverpool because defeat could see the team relegated to Group Two of the Euro/Africa Zone. Fleming, the British number six, will be getting his second taste of the Davis Cup, having featured in the 4-1 defeat by Ukraine in March. The 25-year-old from Linlithgow quit the tour in 2006 to return to his studies but made a tennis comeback in August 2008. "Colin has had some impressive results both in singles and doubles this season and will be a valuable addition to our campaign in Liverpool," said captain John Lloyd. "Josh has been ill for about three weeks now and although he has tried, he has been unable to shake a persistent virus. Unfortunately we just ran out of time to prepare him for the tie. "He needs to focus on getting well and having a good end to this season so that he can be ready to rejoin our Davis Cup campaign next year." Britain face a play-off, which begins on 18 September, because of the defeat by Ukraine. Relegation would see them join the likes of Monaco, Egypt, Lithuania and Ireland in Group Two.
