0128: OK, maybe not 0130 BST but I don't think it will be long. Pironkova puts up a good fight in that game but Sharapova comes through with a blood-curdling scream or two to lead 5-0 in the second set.

0118: My bold prediction this morning of a 0130 BST start time for Murray v Gulbis is looking pretty good as Sharapova grows in confidence and moves a set and 4-0 up on Pironkova. Ivanovic is a set and a break up on Bondarenko.

0110: It's all go in Murray's part of the draw and he's not even playing yet. Navarro has taken the second set 10-8 on the tie-break to lead Karlovic by two sets to love, and Lapentti has levelled at two sets all against Wawrinka.

0102: Bad news for Britain and Team Murray - Ross Hutchins and Stephen Huss have gone down 2-6 6-4 6-4 to Garcia-Lopez/Rochus on Court 15. Sharapova breaks again with a huge forehand return to take the first set 6-3 against Pironkova.

0059: Ivanovic breaks for 3-2 against Bondarenko, and in response to those suggesting I'm anti-Ana - quite the opposite. I've had the good fortune to interview her a couple of times and she's great, just needs to get back on top form. Sharapova plays a howler of a service game and drops it to love but still leads 5-3. And Navarro blows a 40-0 lead when serving for a two-set lead over Karlovic and goes into a tie-break, which is very much Ivo's area of expertise.

0054: Some increasingly interesting news for Andy Murray as Navarro breaks Karlovic again and will serve for a two-set lead, while Wawrinka must hold to avoid a fifth set against Lapentti. Sharapova is 5-2 clear of Pironkova and looks good off the ground, a bit less so on serve.

0041: I would guess there are even more people than usual hoping Sharapova enjoys a quick win tonight, at least in the UK. I think that Maria's father, Yuri, is just taking more of a back seat these days. His daughter moves 3-2 up with a break against Pironkova. Ivanovic has been struggling for over a year now and has 'potential shock' written all over her these days.

2356: Interesting. Wawrinka, who could be another man in Murray's path to the final, drops the third set on a tie-break to Lapentti and now leads two sets to one, so still a bit of work to do. And Karlovic has been broken! Navarro has moved 3-1 up in the first set.

2347: Big Bad (but in reality perfectly nice) Ivo Karlovic is striding Court Four like a colossus. Well, he's held serve in the opening game against Ivan Navarro. Karlovic could be a third-round opponent for Andy Murray.

2310: Do you remember Andy Murray beating tonight's opponent Ernests Gulbis at Wimbledon earlier this summer (when it was hot and hadn't rained for ages - seems a long time ago now)? It was a sparkling straight-sets victory so, if you have forgotten, it's worth reminding yourself of what the world number two is capable of by watching the highlights now, if you are in the UK that is.

2303: Russian fourth seed Elena Dementieva is through to round two after a comfortable 6-1 6-2 win over Camille Pin - there will be no more Pin jokes tonight, you'll be relieved to know. Dementieva plays Melanie Oudin next after she beat Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova by the same scoreline.

Oh, and the all-French encounter between Gael Monfils and Jeremy Chardy (which is first on the Grandstand Court) should be worth keeping tabs on too.

2244: So, what's the order of play for day three? I hear you ask. Well, I certainly hope you ask. I'll start with the Arthur Ashe Court, where Amelie Mauresmo and Aleksandra Wozniak get us under way before Venus Williams takes on Bethanie Mattek-Sands. Wait for it, though, because Rafael Nadal is on after that, with his long-awaited and much-anticipated first-round match with Richard Gasquet. The night session is all about the defending champions, with Roger Federer playing Simon Greul before Serena Williams meets Melinda Czink.

2240: And there's no stopping Elena Dementieva either, by the looks of things. She's nailed the first set 6-1 against Camille Pin and is a break up in the second too, leading 2-1. Looks like she's got Pin's number.

2236: Fernando Gonzalez is through to round two. If I had a 'Chile Up/Down' graphic I would use it here, as he has beaten compatriot Nicolas Massu 6-3 6-3 6-3. Gonzo plays Josselin Ouanna next, after the Frenchman beat Rajeev Ram 7-6 (7-4) 6-4 3-6 6-3.

I think he made the quarters here a couple of years ago and had a really tight match with Andy Roddick in the second round last year. I'm going to have to be on my game and focus hard."

2225: Oh dear. It seems my writing has disintegrated in the same fashion as Dinara Safina's serve did earlier. I got the score wrong in the Djoko AND Gonzo matches below. All corrected now, if you give this page a manual refresh of course.

2222: In the meantime, let's get up to date with what's happening around the courts. Gonzo is now well on top in his all-Chile clash with Nicolas Massu, leading 6-3 6-3 4-1. And 2004 runner-up Elena Dementieva is looking very sharp early on against France's Camille Pin. The fourth seed currently leads 4-1 in the first set but we all know that her bubble can burst at any time, so worth keeping an eye on that one.

2216: Hopefully you lot are aware by now that Andy Murray will start his US Open campaign with a first-round match against Latvia's Ernests Gulbis at around 0130 BST (after the Maria Sharapova-Tsvetana Pironkova match). The Scot has just arrived at Flushing Meadows, no doubt after a couple of games of foot-tennis earlier today. You will be able to follow that match in full here and on BBC Radio 5 live, so make sure you stay awake. I'll be checking to make sure you do.

2212: And, quick as you like, Novak Djokovic wraps up an extremely one-sided win - appropriately enough, given his dominance on serve, with an ace. the fourth seed beats Ivan Ljubicic 6-3 6-1 6-3 and will play Juan Pablo Brzezicki or Carsten Ball in round two.

2210: Djoko rubs it in a bit by breaking again in the next game. He will serve for the match next.

2206: It's not only me who is struggling with technology tonight then. Ljubicic tries to challenge a winner by Djoko that would put the Serb 4-3 up but is then told Hawkeye isn't working. Moaning at the umpire doesn't work so he tries standing disconsolately and staring at him for a few seconds instead. That doesn't work either so he eventually goes to his seat for the changeover. Do you ever have that feeling that it isn't your day?

2159: Things are still going well for Gonzo - he is a break up in the second set too against Massu. Meanwhile, Ljubicic has responded to me writing him off by producing his best spell of the match. He still hasn't gotten to within a sniff of a break but he has at least held serve in this third set, which is level at 3-3.

2155: Yep, Jankovic seals it when Vinci wildly thrashes another forehand long - a 6-2 6-3 win is in the bag for the Serbian. She gives the crowd a nice big wave, and an even bigger smile. A decent start for the former world number one, and let's hope we see more of that big backhand over the next couple of weeks.

2150: Jelena Jankovic is about to seal her progress too. The fifth seed is 6-2 5-2 up against Roberta Vinci, who looks set to extend her miserable record at Flushing Meadows - mainly because she can't seem to get a first serve in to save her life.

2147: One Croatian has made it through to round two though...Marin Cilic has just beaten America's Ryan Sweeting 7-6 (7-2) 6-4 7-6 (7-4).

2144: It's less than three-and-a-half years since Ivan Ljubicic was ranked number three in the world but he is very much yesterday's man on this evidence. He has still not got near Djoko's serve and is struggling to hold every time on his own delivery - this one could be over very quickly indeed...

2131: While I was away, Jelena Jankovic tidied up the first set of her match with Roberta Vinci, taking it 6-2. Cheesy and I are just debating the colour of Djokovic's shirt - is it mustard or custard? We decided it was more the former but could be the latter if you were using that powdered stuff your mum probably used to buy.

2128: Technical problems, don't you just love them? No, as it happens. I was just about to tell you that Gonzo has taken the first set against Massu when my computer decided it wanted to play some games. It won. Still, I'm back now. By the way, Gonzo has won four out of five meetings with his compatriot, including their only encounter on a hard-court.

She has now won five games in a row and is serving for the first set - clearly I was right about the problems she was having at the start of her match!

2112: Seventh seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga after his straightforward win over unseeded American Chase Buchanan: "I didn't know what to expect of him and I was wary as I remember when I was younger and had his ranking I was convinced I could beat anyone, anytime."

2108: Djoko wraps up the first set 6-3. He's serving very well right now - and also made only one unforced error in the whole set. That's the big difference between the two players at the moment, as Ljubicic made 10.

BBC Radio 5 live's David Law tweeting from Flushing Meadows: "Spoke to Bob Brett (coach of Marin Cilic who could face Andy Murray in fourth round). He says Cilic is getting better all the time. Sadly, the word on Marin's Croatian compatriot Mario Ancic is less optimistic. Apparently he can't train for more than 20 minutes without suffering."

2104: That all-Chile clash between Gonzo and Massu is still going with serve at 3-2 in the first set too - looks like those paramedics did a good job.

2010: If I'm Olivia Rogowska's coach, I'm noting down 'work on volleying' at this point. At deuce, she has three chances to put the ball away at the net - but opts for placing the ball in the middle of the court for Safina to gobble up, which she does eventually. Brave stuff from the 18-year-old though. She has saved three break points so far... Still 4-4.

American Jesse Witten after beating Igor Andreev: "It's my first ATP victory - it's been a lot of years. The last couple of weeks I've been playing well and I am not even sure why, but I am just going to roll with it. I played three qualifiers and I feel comfortable on the outside courts here. I wasn't nervous and that helped me get off to a quick start."

1959: It really is gripping... the battle of double-faults between these two. Rogowska levels it at 11-11 and she now leads 4-3. Over on Grandstand, Marin Cilic has been taken to a tie-break in the first set against Ryan Sweeting.

1954: As Dinara Safina flops an 11th double fault into the net, John Lloyd decides to brings up the subject of Anna Kournikova. Bit harsh. Rogowska breaks again and she leads 4-2. This ain't over. No no no.
