Dementieva won the Canadian title for the first time in her career |
Elena Dementieva battled her way to the Rogers Cup title with a 6-4 6-3 victory over fellow Russian Maria Sharapova. The result suggests it was an easy win but there was little between the pair, with many games going to deuce in a tense, error-strewn match. Sharapova was 4-1 down in the first set then broke her opponent twice, before dropping serve again to lose the set. Dementieva then broke twice more in the second, with the winning point courtesy of a poorly-judged Sharapova drop-shot. | 606: DEBATE |
"I'm just so thrilled to win this title," said the 27-year-old Dementieva, who beat Serena Williams in the semi-final. "I've tried for so many years, now I've made it." The tournament alternates between Toronto and Montreal every year, last three women to win in Toronto - Justine Henin in 2003, Kim Clijsters in 2005 and Henin in 2007 - have gone on to win the US Open. Sharapova, who reached her first final since April 2008, was happy with the progress she had made after returning from injury. "Nice to finally hold a trophy, it feels like it has been a while," said the 22-year-old who was handed a runners-up prize. "About this time last year I got the news that I would be out of the game for a while. Now a year later, I'm at this stage, with the little trophy, but still here."
