By Saj Chowdhury

1932: Anon via text on 81111: "The Andy Murray steam machine will roll and crush the rest and be US grand slam winner and number 1 in the world be 4 xmas!"
Don't you love passion. Until next time, cheers for reading.

1927: Murray's stamina truly is amazing. He looked so out-of-sorts in the first set and a break down in the second. He's looking very good for the rest of the week and the US Open.

ANDY MURRAY BEATS JULIEN BENNETEAU 4-6 6-3 6-1

THIRD SET

Murray 4-6 6-3 6-1 Benneteau
Murray's beginning to dig shots out from the baseline beautifully - unlike earlier in the match. He takes the match with a decent serve that Benneteau can only get his racket to. Murray is on course to retain his crown and win back-to-back Masters titles.

*Murray 4-6 6-3 5-1 Benneteau
Murray seems content to see this out on his serve by sitting at the back of the court (not literally) on Benneteau's serve. But Benneteau's unforced error count is increasing. Advantage to Murray - break saved with a difficult volley at the net. Murray breaks again after the Frenchman's backhand hits the net post.

pottiella on 606: "Please just hold from now on Andy....almost over the line. We all have bad days..."

Murray 4-6 6-3 4-1 Benneteau*
Murray's now stretching down to win points - demoralising for his tired opponent. Murray wins the game with an ace.

*Murray 4-6 6-3 3-1 Benneteau
The younger, fitter Murray is beginning to stamp his superiority on the match - better late than never. Benneteau's now playing like one of those super-heavyweight fighters swinging in the 12th round. Love 40 again for Murray. Add insult to injury Benneteau gets a time violation warning. Murray breaks. Only one outcome now - I think.

Murray 4-6 6-3 2-1 Benneteau*
Murray holds again with a powerful serve down the middle. We still can't get auto-refresh to work on this. So I guess you need to give your refresh buttons bit of a work out.

*Murray 4-6 6-3 1-1 Benneteau
Time for a break, Andy? Murray rushes into a 0-40 lead. Three break points. Credit to Benneteau, he saves them all. Then another. Benneteau holds, bravely. By the way, the umpire's giving the ball boys and girls all sorts of advice - c'mon mate, it's their school holidays.

Murray 4-6 6-3 1-0 Benneteau*
Julien looks tres fatigue (apologies French language fans). Murray is looking decent now - he holds.

SECOND SET

Lev, East Grinstead via text on 81111: "Murray's woken up now, shouldn't lose from here. Such a gritty customer these days. "
I've learnt never to make assumptions - actually, I'll never learn.

*Murray 4-6 6-3 Benneteau
Benneteau's made 20 unforced errors in this set and made just made 12 in the last. He's tiring. Set point for the Scot. Murray takes it by swinging the Frenchman left to right, before Benneteau finally gives up the chase.

Murray 4-6 5-3 Benneteau*
The Frenchman is making it tough for Murray. The Scot is taken to deuce again, but Murray holds with an angled forehand spank at the net.

Ross, Charterhouse via text on 81111: "Murray is too good to suffer a drop in form for too long. Think he will win this, & be the bookies favourite for the US Open, and rightly so. "
Bookies fave for the US? Hmmm...

*Murray 4-6 4-3 Benneteau
The Frenchman holds comfortably, but Murray is still in control of the set. By the way the 'auto-refresh' is on the blink. Go manual kids. Retro-style.

Murray 4-6 4-2 Benneteau*
Strange game this one. Murray is in command before Benneteau takes it to deuce. Unforced errors from Benneteau spares Murray. Remember the Frenchman played a three-hour match yesterday. This is a good effort.

Martin, Northwich via text on 81111: "Any chance Murray's thinking now's a good time for an extended break before the US Open? "
Tricky one to call - seems like a tougher lad these days.

*Murray 4-6 3-2 Benneteau
Cracking point from Murray - double-handed backhand down the line - textbook. Break point. The Frenchman hits a backhand too long.

Murray 4-6 2-2 Benneteau*
Murray holds. Far more controlled game from the Scot. The fightback is on.

Bill Fortune, All Souls, via text on 81111: "Re: 17.02. And for your next prediction Saj? "
Yeah, OK, I can take it.

*Murray 4-6 1-2 Benneteau
Murray has come to life. The Scot wins a rally that almost lasted as long as the one in Monte Carlo, to break back. Truly epic. I would describe each stroke, but we would be talking War and Peace.

Murray 4-6 0-2 Benneteau*
Benneteau's playing some lovely tennis on the hard blue surface - Murray, on the other hand, is not. Too many errors. Not good prep for the USO. Murray saves one break point, but a good drop at the net creates another before a long pass from Murray is too long. Break for Benneteau.

*Murray 4-6 0-1 Benneteau
An official fluffs up his lines by calling a crucial point out then in with Benneteau on advantage. C'mon official - he has a nice moustache though. Benneteau takes the game anyway.

Mad_for_Chelsea on 606: "well there you go, sixth double fault and this is terrible from Murray, worst set he's played for a very, very long time.."

FIRST SET

Murray 4-6 Benneteau*
Murray has made a ridiculous amount of unforced errors - number 20 to go 0-30. Not pretty. Murray lets out the biggest shriek of the day - two set points for the Frennchman. A double fault gives Benneteau the first set. Yes, really.

*Murray 4-5 Benneteau
Murray comes out on top in after a great rally to go 15-40. In the next, Murray makes the first challenge of the match, believing the ball was out, but it wasn't. The Scot has to hold serve to stay in the set.

Murray 4-4 Benneteau*
Murray is one of those sports stars who you don't know if they're 'at the races' or not - bit like former winger Chris Waddle. He holds serve with an adequate forehand.

BulletMonkey on 606: "What a pathetic comment from JamesAutar, that four Masters titles is apparently worthless. I'm sure it breaks Murray's heart as well to know that some guy who will never achieve anything in his life thinks six-time major winner Nadal might be a bit better than him."
As Harry Hill would say.....

*Murray 3-4 Benneteau
Well, he's older and further down the rankings, but Benneteau looks the better player at the moment. He holds.

Murray 3-3 Benneteau*
Break point for Benneteau but rushes his return into the net. Murray gives him another chance at deuce with a lazy forehand in the net. The number two saves with an ace. But he gifts his opponent another and this time Murray overhits an forehand. Break back. By the way if the 'auto-refesh' doesn't work for you guys just do the ol' skool manual refresh.

JamesAutar on 606: "Murray is No.2 but unfortunately he's won 'nothing' and until he does then I can never ever consider him to be a better player than Nadal."

*Murray 3-2 Benneteau
Murray's playing with the Frenchman now. Maybe the last game gave the Scot a little kick up the backside. Remarkable forehand return with heavy topspin deceives Benneteau at the net. Murray has three break points. He takes the third after tiring the Frenchman with an mini-epic rally.
denotes NEXT server

Murray 2-2 Benneteau*
Well, now. Benneteau has break point after firing a forehand return back into Murray's feet. Murray saves, before saving another at deuce. He holds with a superb dropshot.

*Murray 1-2 Benneteau
The Scot pulls the scores to 30-30, but Benneteau holds again with another well-placed serve, which Murray returns into the net.

Murray 1-1 Benneteau*
It seems Murray's gameplan - which is his gameplan for a lot of matches - will be to wear out his opponent. The fourth point to go 40-15 is a great example - keeping Benneteau at the baseline before reeling him in spanking down a forehand past the Frenchman. He holds serve.

* Murray 0-1 Benneteau
The Frenchman serves first. Decent rally for the third point which Murray wins as a result of a long forehand from Benneteau. Decent serve wins the Frenchman the game.

1705 BST: By the way, does anybody remember the TV show WKRP in Cincinnati? I never watched it but always saw it was on around midnight-ish in the TV listings.

1702 BST: Murray has played Benneteau before - that was at Wimbledon three years ago. Murray won that day although he did drop a set. I'll be surprised if the Scot drops a set today.

1657 BST: World number two Andy Murray - still incredible to think he's the number two - continues the defence of his Cincinnati title against France's Julien Benneteau. The current world number 55, who beat Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in the last round, is actually in the tournament because Juan Martin del Potro pulled out at the last minute as a result of fatigue. Del Potro, as we all know, lost to Murray at the Montreal Masters final last week. Now Benneteau is playing Murray. Tennis eh?
