Murray says he is happy with his form in the run-up to the US Open
Andy Murray has told BBC Scotland that rising to number two in the world tennis rankings feels "great".
The 22-year-old Scot, who won the Montreal Masters against Juan Martin del Potro on Sunday, said he was happy with his form before the US Open.
"Getting to number two for the first time is great for me. It's the fourth Masters series that I've won, which is awesome as well," said Murray.
Next week he will attempt to defend his Cincinnati Masters title.
The Scot said he was pleasantly surprised with his recent form since taking a break following his exertions at Wimbledon.
Murray defeated the world number six from Argentina 6-7 (4-7) 7-6 (7-3) 6-1 at Montreal for his 13th career title, and fourth at the elite Masters level.
By reaching the final, Murray had guaranteed that he moved to second in the new world rankings on Monday.
And he expressed delight at splitting world number one Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.
Federer not surprised by Murray ranking
"It's been a great way to start again after Wimbledon," he said.
"I took quite a long break and went away and trained, so I came in wanting to do well but didn't have that high expectations.
"After a break you never know how you're going to play. So, to win a tournament was perfect."
Murray said he needed to rest properly before defending his Cincinnati title because he expected the conditions to be extremely hot.
"I obviously feel good this week, but I could easily play terrible next week and not feel great going into the US Open (on 31 August)," he added.
"This week was perfect preparation and I hope next week is the same and that I can go on to New York with a lot of confidence."
