Roddick slipped in the fourth set against Federer at Wimbledon

Wimbledon runner-up Andy Roddick has withdrawn from the United States team for their Davis Cup quarter-final in Croatia because of a hip injury.

Roddick lost a five-set epic to Roger Federer at Wimbledon on Sunday after a final set which finished 16-14, the longest in Grand Slam final history.

And the US Tennis Association said Roddick had been hurt during his match against the world number one.

Mardy Fish, who reached the third round at Wimbledon, will replace Roddick.

The world number six slipped on the grass at the All England Club in the eighth game of the fourth set against Federer and took his time to get to his feet, but managed to play on for another hour and a half.

After the match, Roddick was asked whether he hurt himself in that fall, and replied, "No. It was OK."

Roddick has previously played in 18 consecutive Davis Cup matches for the US, helping his country to the 2007 title.

"Andy has been a stalwart for this team the past nine years, and his dedication to Davis Cup and his teammates is unquestioned," said US captain Patrick McEnroe.

"Andy had a great run at Wimbledon. He battled for more than four hours yesterday and fought hard to reach the final. Understandably, his body is not up for the rigors of Davis Cup in such a short turnaround."

He added: "Mardy is a Davis Cup veteran and we appreciate his willingness to join the team on short notice. He has been playing well and we are glad to have him back in the singles line up."

The match in Porec begins on Friday.
