Federer already holds the US and French Open titles |
Five-time champion Roger Federer will be the main attraction on day three at Wimbledon as he attempts to secure a place in the third round. The Swiss star, going for a record 15th Grand Slam title, will take on Spain's Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in the second match on Centre Court. Maria Sharapova opens play on Centre against Gisela Dulko at 1300 BST. Novak Djokovic will resume his campaign against Simon Greul in the opening match on Court One. Second seed and two-time champion Serena Williams takes on Australia's Jarmila Groth in the second match on Court One, followed by Tommy Haas and Michael Llodra. Sharapova, the 2004 champion, is on her way back to full fitness after a serious shoulder injury and admits she is still very aware of the problem. "It's funny because sometimes I'll be in the middle of the match and I'll find myself thinking about the progression of the shoulder, how it's feeling," said the Russian. | 606: DEBATE |
"Obviously that's because I haven't played in so long and because the shoulder has just been the focus in so many areas on a daily basis for the last couple of years. "I think it's also just a matter of forgetting about it and just playing." Federer described his opening win over Yen-Hsun Lu as "a very solid performance" and admitted he was happy to feel the tournament was truly under way. "Once you're in it, I think things kind of are just a little bit easier just because you've been able to watch a few matches, your mind's right in the tournament; whereas before you're trying to be in it," he said. "It can be over quickly. I mean, thank goodness it hasn't happened in a long, long time that I've lost in the first round of a Slam, but it's not so easy, and then you've got to stay concentrated for a long time. Two, three weeks is a long time." Fernando Verdasco, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Marin Cilic are among the other men's contenders in action on Wednesday.
