Andy Murray should make it to the final of Wimbledon this year - no pressure then! He's playing great, his fitness has gone to a new level and he learned a lot since last year. Andy got his best result in France and then won Queen's. He's got it tough though - it will be a hard first two rounds with Robbie Kendrick up first and either Riccardo Ghedin or Ernests Gulbis waiting in the next round. Could it be another Grand Slam final between Murray and Federer? |
Murray has worked himself into a position where he's got an edge on people and he just needs to step that up. I'd love the final to be Roger Federer, going for a record 15th Grand Slam title, up against Murray. But there are many guys who are going to be pushing them such as Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Fernando Verdasco. Federer came out sharp and tried to take it to Yen-Hsun Lu in his first round match on Monday. His opponent played tough but then Federer settled. Winning the French Open completed him but to say he won't be feeling the pressure is not true. I can't see Novak Djokovic challenging though, not the way he's playing. He beat Julien Bennteau but he's playing too defensively. He doesn't seem to play with the belief we saw earlier in his career. He didn't seem to play with a lot of energy at the French Open and now he's feeling too much pressure. He seems to be playing not to lose, rather than going out to try to win. Moving on to the women, it's great to see Maria Sharapova back. I love the way she competes and it's been too long since we've seen her. | 606: DEBATE |
She did well in France and ran out of gas, but she showed a lot of heart. She did well in beating Viktoriya Kutuzova and she's definitely one of the five top contenders. The Williams sisters are favourites to win this year but there's better depth in the women's game now. It is definitely improving. They had a long way to go 20 years ago but they are better athletes now. Some players get overwhelmed at Wimbledon and that's why they lose 6-0 6-0. But it's not as easy these days. The likes of Serena Williams won't get the matches where they win without breaking a sweat. It doesn't work like that any more. They often get tested early on in big events. Portugal teenager Michelle Larcher de Brito grunting to glory |
Laura Robson did well, despite going down on her debut to Daniela Hantuchova. She obviously had nothing to lose. When you're 15 you're not afraid of anything. She won't know know the meaning of this thing we call life just yet! It will be interesting to see how she develops - physically as well as mentally. As for the grunting, they don't have to do it! Sometimes it needs to be done but it is controllable. Michelle Larcher de Brito - the 16-year-old from Portugal and renowned grunter - is so young. She doesn't need to do it! She says it's an integral part of her game but she's still developing! John McEnroe was talking on BBC Two's Today at Wimbledon
