Eaton will lose valuable ranking points as a result of his defeat |
Chris Eaton will be unable to match last year's Wimbledon heroics as he fell in the first round of qualifying. Eaton hit the headlines in 2008 when he qualified and became the only British man apart from Andy Murray to reach the second round at the All England Club. But the 21-year-old made a swift exit at Roehampton on Monday, losing 6-4 6-2 to Frenchman Stephane Robert. Britons Josh Milton, Dan Cox, Marcus Willis and Alex Slabinsky did win in the first round. Milton earned a wildcard for the tournament via the LTA's play-off and the 19-year-old defeated 30th seed Alexandre Sidorenko 2-6 7-6 (7-4) 6-1 on his Wimbledon qualifying debut. | 606: DEBATE |
Cox edged a tight match against Ireland's Conor Niland 6-3 1-6 8-6, while Marcus Willis saw off American Amer Delic 7-6 (9-7) 7-6 (8-6). Slabinsky defeated Romanian Adrian Cruciat 6-4 6-4. Like Eaton, Richard Bloomfield and Daniel Smethurst were first-round losers, going out to Dieter Kindlmann and Marco Chiudinelli respectively. Eaton, currently ranked 317th in the world, will lose valuable ranking points as a result of his defeat.
