1719: Roddick is now two sets and a break up on Jouan and looking good on the clay. Lopez and Ferreiro are 1-1 in the fifh.
1710: Spain's Feliciano Lopez, the 28th seed, has fought back from two sets down to force a decider against Brazil's Franco Ferreiro on Court Three. Roddick was serving at 84% in the second set against Jouan - tasty.
1703: Roddick takes the second set 6-4 against Jouan but the 23-year-old Frenchman is pushing the American now, and the home crowd are starting to get involved. Roddick willl want to keep him quiet at the start of the third.
1700: The order of play is in for Tuesday, with Jelena Jankovic, Novak Djokovic and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga the big names on Court Philippe Chatrier. Svetlana Kuznetsova and Serena Williams will begin their campaigns on Court Suzanne Lenglen. However, the weather forecast is not great for tomorrow in Paris.
1658: Serbia's
Janko Tipsarevic beats Albert Montanes 3-6 7-6 (7-3) 7-6 (7-5) 6-4.
1653: "I'm definitely a third-set player. Once I get to the third set I feel a new level coming."
Venus Williams after her three-set win over Bethanie Mattek-Sands 1650: "Come On!!! Tomas takes the 3rd set 7-5! "WHO NEEDS MOURINHO, WE'VE GOT BERDYCH...IO"
From asabovesobellow on 606 1649: I f you can't view the Keothavong video via the link below then you can find it on the tennis page. Roddick is steaming along at a set and a break up on Jouan. Court Philippe Chatrier is hosting an all-French encounter between Marion Bartoli and Pauline Parmentier, who leads by a break.
1640: Fair play to Anne Keothavong, she puts a brave face on her 6-0 6-0 defeat by Dinara Safina and fronts up for a post-match interview. If you have the technology to view video, take a look...
"Keothavong eager to forget heavy loss"
1636: Roddick is clearly over the disappointment of his failures as a tourist yesterday (see 1317 entry) as he races through the first set serving at 79% and goes a break up in the second. And so to the burning issue of the day - Rafa defends his pink and yellow number: "I don't know, why was I in white and yellow two weeks ago? It's better than to dress in the same colour every week, no?" Well....
1629: Maria Sharapova beats Anastasiya Yakimova 3-6 6-1 6-2 and goes on to face fellow Russian Nadia Petrova in round two.
1625: "Hey Piers. Just took the advice of the text mad anon and checked out Mathilde Johansson's website... Oh my!"
From Aaron, Wales, via text on 81111 1624: "Roger played well today, looked a lot more solid than for a long while."
From Rafael, Paris, via text 1620: Apologies for the delay, more technical problems. It makes me want to smash things but I'm told this "doesn't help". Very mature, I'm sure. Roddick is demolishing Jouan at the moment, 5-2, and Sharapova is edging towards victory at 4-2.
1613: Right, a bit of a switcharound and we now have Andy Roddick against France's world number 305, Romain Jouan, on the Red Button and streaming. Sharapova leads Yakimova 3-2 with a break in the decider.
1603: Roger Federer beats Albert Martin 6-4 6-3 6-2. Impressive stuff from the world number two. "I just wonder whether Federer tried a few things today with great rival Nadal in mind," says
Jonathan Overend on the Red Button. 1600: Sharapova seals the second set 6-1 against Yakimova, and Federer gives it some "C'mon!" after a breathtaking backhand winner when hurtling forwards to pick up a drop shot. Amazing stuff.
1555: Martin plays one dreamy backhand down the line past Federer at the net, but the Swiss remains in control at two sets and 4-2 up.
1550: Well, the optimism about British women's tennis ends - for today - as
Olga Govortsova beats Katie O'Brien 6-1 6-1, meaning the Brit follows Mel South and Anne Keothavong out of the tournament. Let's not be too harsh though, eh? It was the first time we had three women in the main draw since the very dawn of time. And we've still got Laura Robson in the juniors.
1543: O'Brien misses a break point and is a game from defeat against Govortsova. Good news A-Rod fans, assuming Martin doesn't launch the comeback of all comebacks the Red Button and streaming will switch to Roddick v Jouan at the end of the Federer match.
1537: "Re 1514 we're on phillip chartier right now and this fed match is pretty dull, a procession! Jus seen the mel south match and is was quality altho shame bout the result!"
From Paris in the sun, love Will and Rob, via text 1536: "In reply to uncletennis god. I held a door open for katie at the shrewsbury event last year and she didnt say thank you. Im still hurting inside."
From Jake via text 1534: Federer wraps up the second set against Martin after a bit of fight from the Spaniard, and Sharapova is 4-0 and serving in the second against Yakimova.
1531: "If he reaches the final against Rafa, will someone please tell Fed to consult Agassi, who, as he acknowledged in the recent Gaby Logan interview, remains an assiduous student of the tactical side of the game?! Wouldn't that be a fantastic player/coach pairing?!"
From Fedfan, London, via text on 81111 1528: The dream is over.
Guillaume Rufin beats Eduardo Schwank 6-1 6-3 6-1. It gives Eduardo more time to hone his game for an assault on the Wimbledon title.
1525:"I once ballgirled for Katie at an ITF tournament. She was a really nice girl and an excellent player so I hope she wins."
From UncleToniisaGod on 606 1521: Sharapova did not arrive in Paris with many expectations, having only returned last week after nine months out following shoulder surgery. However, it's still a surprise to see the Russian drop the first set 6-3 against Yakimova. Govortsova has taken the first set against O'Brien 6-1 and Federer is closing on a two-set lead against Martin.
1514: "Why isn't Court Philippe Chatrier full? If Federer was on centre court at wimbledon it would be packed!"
From anon via text on 81111 (True - and apparently it's officially a sell-out today)
1512: I would be surprised if that sandwich was made in 2009, let alone this month. O'Brien misses a break point and trails Govortsova 4-1. Bondarenko has levelled at one set all against Cibulkova on Court 17. Feliciano Lopez trails Franco Ferreiro by two sets.
1509: "Whilst Piers munches on his petrol station sandwich safe in the knowledge that it was probably made in mid May, a real battle is going on between Cibulkova and Bondarenko out on court 17 and really wish we could see more of this match but hey cannot have it all."
From Stuart on 606 1508: "I have to say that surely Eduardo Schwank can't lose in the first round. That is of course based entirely on his name but truly accurate none the less."
From barneysfulham on 606 1505: Govortsova leads O'Brien 3-0. I think I'm going to have another look at Mathilde Johansson's website to cheer myself up.
1458: Federer breaks Martin to love to take the first set 6-4, Sharapova has battled back to lead Yakimova 3-2, and 12th seed
Fernando Gonzalez beats Jiri Vanek 6-3 6-2 6-3. Britain's last woman standing, Katie O'Brien, is out on the dreaded Court 14 against Olga Govortsova of Belarus.
1455: Mel South might be feeling a bit cheesed off right now but it's nothing compared to my own mood following the realisation that the sandwich bar is closed today. I have had to make do with a petrol station-style sandwich and a packet of crisps. And Eduardo Schwank is now two sets down. Rubbish.
1440: Right, after the latest blow to British pride I'm off to find food. Federer is now 3-2 up on Martin, Maria Sharapova has started against Anastasiya Yakimova and is a break down, and Schwank is a set and a break down against Rufin. But never write off Eduardo. I will return soon...
1435: Michelle Larcher De Brito beats Britain's Mel South 0-6 7-6 (7-5) 7-5, after an epic final game. Good work from the highly-rated 16-year-old Portuguese, heartbreak for the Brit. Katie O'Brien, your country needs you...
1425: South saves one break point but not the second and De Brito will serve for the match again. Meanwhile, Martin breaks Federer in the opening game on Chatrier.
1419: De Brito has a match point on serve but the 16-year-old Portuguese qualifier cannot convert and South breaks back - it's 5-5!
1418: "Dude - have you checked out Mathilde Johansson's website? there's only word for it: super-sensational."
From anon via text on 81111 (Dude, I just have - blimey.)
1414: Mel South battles back to 4-4 in the decider against De Brito but then is immediately broken again - it's all getting a bit much. A calm Roger Federer is out on Chatrier and is resisting the wave of neon that appears to be taking over tennis - he's gone for a pastel blue. And Wawrinka has completed a superb recovery to defeat Devilder 6-4 in the fifth.
1404: "Just chatting to a friend I was training with last year who grew up with Nadal. Talking about training as a junior and how he was forever on court hitting balls and worked on his strength at 14/15 years old. Even as a junior the 'world beaters' stand out! Great coverage! More slow-mo's! Fabulous to watch!"
From Chris, Derby, via text on 81111 1402: Mel South remains a break down in the final set against De Brito as a victorious Nadal signs autographs on his way off Court Philippe Chatrier. Next up, Roger Federer against Spain's Alberto Martin.
1359: Rafael Nadal beats Marcos Daniel 7-5 6-4 6-3 to reach round two and improve his career record at Roland Garros to 29-0. Formidable (in a French accent).
1355: "Michelle Larcher de Brito was Keothavong's hitting partner in Melbourne.... fact of the day contender perhaps?"
Sophie in Cambridge via text on 81111 1354: Mais non, mais non.... South drops 3-1 down in the final set against De Brito. Should the unthinkable happen and the Brit loses, she can at least take solace from feeling better than France's Mathilde Johansson, who missed eight match points yesterday, double-faulting on four of them, as she lost 10-8 in the third against Russia's Vitalia Diatchenko. "At the moment, I just feel like running away," said the tearful 19-year-old Frenchwoman afterwards. Bless.
1346: Mais oui, mais oui... Nadal steps in and cracks away a beautiful cross-court backhand to get the double break in the third set against Daniel. We also have a couple of BBC Sport favourites in action now, Fernando 'Gonzo' Gonzalez leading Jiri Vanek by two sets, and otherwise unheralded 1970s maverick cop and playboy, Eduardo Schwank, who has just started against Guillaume Rufin.
1342: "Michelle Larcher De Brito's shrieking would make Sharapova wince. It's a joke. She also celebrates hysterically every time South makes an error. She's winding us up, if I'm honest. One set all. I'm impartial but... c'mon Mel."
5 Live's Jonathan Overend Rafael Nadal goes for pink and yellow this year - shocking or not? |
1339: Away from the trials and tribulations of British tennis, the peerless Nadal is 2-1 up with a break in the third set against Daniel. The French crowd, rather quiet until now, gives an excellent round of jeering, whistling and cat-calling (what is cat-calling?) to some late arrivals in the stands. They are merciless. And after all the chat about Nadal's outfit, you can now be the judge...
1335: Portuguese qualifier De Brito takes the tie-break 7-5 after South saves two set points and the Briton will need to win it in a deciding set. Keep the faith, people.
1332: "Venus is through in the battle of the tennis players own clothes line match."
From Stuart on 606 1330: Mel South is into a tie-break against De Brito - squeaky bum time.
Venus Williams now has a posterior free of irritation after finally seeing off Bethanie Mattek-Sands 6-1 4-6 6-2.
1328: "I was disappointed by Anne's performance after her recent good form, but if i see her on Mare St I will give her a hug."
From Barbs, a fellow Hackney-ite, via text on 81111 1323: "Disappointing end to the 10th game for Mel South," says
5 Live's Jonathan Overend. "She hit a brilliant crosscourt forehand onto the line to move to 30-30, two points from the match, but then the forehand deserted her - into the net for 30-40 and then a mishit on the break point. Getting tense..."
1322: Will the torture never end? Mel South serves for the match against De Brito but is broken and it's 5-5. Nadal, meanwhile, is going through the gears and seals the second set against Daniel. Venus is a game away now, and Wawrinka fights back from a double-break down to force a fifth against Devilder. Sensational (in a French accent).
1317: By the way, anyone who was checking in yesterday will have learnt that Andy Roddick was off to the Parisian catacombs with wife Brooklyn, Justin Gimelstob and Mrs Mardy Fish. Well, bad news to report I'm afraid - when they got there it was closed. "Bummer," as A-Rod says. Never mind, they all went to see Star Trek instead.
1310: "Great tactic in the last game from Mel South," says
5 Live's Jonathan Overend. "She's started moonballing De Brito and the Florida-based teen is being pushed up against the backstops, then Mel turns up the heat with a big flat forehand and it's point over. De Brito came from 0-6 down to win her last qualifying match incidentally!"
1308: I don't know where to start with that last texter - this country.... Anyway, Mel South is doing us proud with a break of serve to lead 6-0 3-2 against De Brito. Venus is an early break up in the decider against Mattek-Sands, Nadal plays a brilliant game to go a break up on Daniel in the second set, and my thoughts are starting to turn to the Television Centre Bank Holiday lunch options.
1305: "Just woken up (student) to see rafa's ridiculous colour combination. I usually want him to win, but if I ever wanted to see him lose it's wearing that."
From J via text on 81111 1303: Nadal breaks back immediately, not altogether surprisingly. I should tell you that Andy Murray will face Potito Starace in round two after the Italian benefited from the retirement of Mischa Zverev at one set all earlier today.
1256: Daniel gets an early break against Nadal to lead 3-1 in the second set, and Mattek-Sands levels at one set all against Venus. No such problems for Mel South, who leads De Brito 6-0 1-1 on Court 14. "Wow, what a first set from Mel South - 6-0," says
5 Live's Jonathan Overend. "She hardly missed a ball and hit brilliant winners all over the court, the forehand especially doing the damage in the final game, holding serve to love. Can't believe how well she is playing, totally willing to go for her shots and they're all going in!"
1252: Fair play to Mrs Mattek-Sands, she's making Venus work hard in the second set and leads 5-4. Devilder is closing in on a good win over Wawrinka on Court One, while Nadal is putting in a bit of a scratchy performance on Chatrier and is huffing and puffing against Daniel early in the second set.
1244: "This tasteful pink/yellow combination is really reminding me of Battenberg."
From Martin, land of no accessible Battenberg, via text
1240: "Mel South has just held serve with five points in a row from 0-40 and leads 5-0. Running forehand winner down the line at 15-40, then a screaming backhand on game point. Her opponent smacked the ground with her racquet in frustration, she isn't doing much wrong but this is the best I've ever seen Mel play."
5 Live's Jonathan Overend 1240: "I can't remember anything like that happening to me before but in the end you just have to find ways to laugh about it. What else is there to do? I'm sure there will be a few jokes about it but I can take it."
Anne Keothavong after her 6-0 6-0 defeat by Dinara Safina 1234: I might have to start doing this in morse code so the technology can cope. South leads 3-0 with a double break - stop. Nadal leads Daniel 7-5 - stop. Devilder leads Wawrinka two sets to one - stop. Venus leads Mattek-Sands 6-1 3-3 - stop.
1225: Britain's Melanie South breaks serve in the opening game against Portuguese qualifier Michelle Larcher De Brito on Court 14. I hope to keep you up to date with this one but I may have to switch to a ZX81 as this computer is about to get hurled out of the window.
1217: Computer issues are driving me mental and I am on the verge of a Basil Fawltyesque episode, if only I had a tree branch handy. Nadal breaks Daniel to lead 5-4 - and then drops serve with poor game. Shocker.
1210: "Can we stop feeling sorry for anne. She doesnt deserve a hug, she should be straight back out to practice or she will never get any better!"
From Tim via text on 81111 1205: So, Nadal is 3-4 down on serve against Daniel in a keenly contested encounter on Chatrier, Venus is 6-1 up on Mattek-Sands in, presumably, a less keenly contested encounter on Lenglen. We are not far from seeing Britain's Melanie South take on Portuguese qualifier Michelle Larcher De Brito on Court 14, and
Nikolay Davydenko has beaten Stefan Koubek 6-2 6-1 6-4.
1200: "Loving the pink n yellow on both sides of the net, loving the iplayer coverage, loving the text commentary. Hating being at work."
From Phil, at, err, work, via text on 81111 1159: "Rafa is picking off daniel's weaknesses and only time will show this but rafa is about to break daniel."
From Ross via text 1155: Fantastic cross-Channel teamwork means I can inform you, via
BBC Sport's Vicky Cotton in Paris, what Mattek is wearing. "Disappointingly it's only a black vest top and green skirt, not a touch of bonkers to be seen! Maybe marriage has seen her settle down."
1150: It's been quite a lively start from Mr Daniel, who even has the temerity to serve-volley against Nadal. The Spaniard smotes - yes, smotes - a couple of vicious forehands as if to teach the Brazilian a lesson but Daniel holds for 2-1. Incidentally, Daniel has countered Nadal's electric pink number with a luminous yellow top, clashing delightfully with the ballkids' neon green outfits. Apparently the youngsters love all this neon.
1135: It's not all about Rafa you know. Venus Williams has just got under way on Court Suzanne Lenglen against fellow American Bethanie Mattek-Sands, who we hope is wearing something bonkers as usual. Davydenko is two sets and a break up on Koubek, and Wawrinka is a set up on Devilder.
1131: "Rafa is looking fantastic in pink - i don't think Rog would be quite that brave!"
From Charlotte via text on 81111 1130: Nadal is unbeaten at Roland Garros with a 28-0 career record and is attempting to become the first man to win five French Open titles in a row. He is up against 30-year-old Marcos Daniel from Passo Fundo, Brazil, the world number 97 who spends much of his time on the Challenger circuit. Good luck, Marcos.
1126: Apologies for the odd delay here and there, the publishing system appears to be having a day off. While I have been cursing my frozen screen, world number one and four-time defending champion Rafael Nadal has made his way onto Court Philippe Chatrier. He's wearing a bright pink t-shirt and neon yellow head and sweatbands. You need to be the world number one to get away with that, and even then...
1117: "I'm glad her parents are there. Someone needs to give Anne a big hug after this! She must be feeling terrible."
From EdTennisFan on 606 Keothavong 0-6 0-6 Safina Safina gets to 40-0 and three match points but wastes the first two going for big winners, and nets on the third. Keothavong then gets a game point... but goes long. Safina misses her fourth match point with a long forehand. A second game point for Keothavong is dismissed by a Safina backhand, and the Russian finally ends the torture on her fifth match point with a forehand winner.
That was not pleasant for any of us, and there is no doubt Keothavong was completely outclassed, but Safina looked good and will be hard for anyone to stop.
Keothavong * 0-6 0-5 Safina Ker-thump! Safina buries a smash with ruthless efficiency but is soon chuntering away to herself after an error brings her to 30-30. She takes the game with some gentle overhead practice followed by a drop volley, as poor Keothavong races around like a ballgirl behind the baseline.
Keothavong 0-6 0-4 * Safina I can't look. Even the French are willing on the lonely Brit as Keothavong gets to 40-0 and then makes an error with a forehand followed by two double-faults. The racquet gets some abuse, understandably. Keothavong goes long with a backhand and we are two games from the end of this now.
1055: "Trust me, you do panic," says
John Lloyd on the Red Button as he describes his feelings when he once trailed Jimmy Connors 6-0 6-0 2-0 in front of 12,000 people.
1053: Just to let you know, Nikolay Davydenko is the only other significant name out there at the moment, leading Stefan Koubek by a set on Court Two.
Keothavong * 0-6 0-3 Safina The centre-line judge takes emergency evasive action when a Safina smash bears down on his most valuable assets, prompting a smirk from the Russian. Keothavong is not smiling as she sees a 0-30 lead disappear and it's 10 games in a row for the Russian number one when Keothavong belts a forehand volley over the baseline.
Keothavong 0-6 0-2 * Safina This is racing away alarmingly now, although Safina looks surprisingly furious when she puts a drop shot wide on her second break point. She takes it out on the next point, swiping a backhand into the corner. I am not going to mention bagels in any form, particularly 'double'.
Keothavong * 0-6 0-1 Safina The court has been swept, the sun is peeping out and the kettle is on. A fresh start all round. Except for Keothavong, who drops her seventh straight game as Safina powers through a love hold. The Russian gets a net cord on the last point.
Keothavong 0-6 * Safina At 15-15, Safina steps in on a second serve and absolutely crunches it down the line for a winner. She then climbs all over the next point to earn two set points, and takes it with a blistering forehand down the line. A great set from Safina and not a bad one from Keothavong. Honestly.
1036: "If Anne wants any chance of winning she has to get safina running, she's so powerful at the baseline it'll be very difficult to try and overpower her."
Neil from sunny Bury via text on 81111 Keothavong * 0-5 Safina Another game, another 30-30, another big, big winner from Safina. She gets so much bite on the forehand it pretty much bounces over Keothavong. Still, the Briton gets to deuce before Safina takes the game with a backhand arrowed down the line.
Keothavong 0-4 * SafinaKeothavong is battling hard, punching away a forehand volley followed by a winner for 30-15, but a double-fault moments later sees her at 30-40 and break-point down. Again the Briton is well and truly in the rally but falters first under the weight of Safina's shots, and the Russian has a double-break.
1026: "I'd like to answer the comment that I just read about Safina being a Safin and that now Keothavong has a serious forehand, so there might be a chance.... Answer: Yeah! why not?? I could have a chance to beat Nadal if I step on court and the guy has an injury!!"
From therealsatyricon on 606 Keothavong * 0-3 SafinaA double-fault and a woeful forehand see Safina slip behind at 15-30 and it appears to be a bit windy out there today. "Swirling," as one of my colleagues describes it. Keothavong is doing all the running but Safina nets a backhand to earn a break point. Safina steps up at the key moment with a huge backhand winner. "That's heavy," says
John Lloyd on the Red Button.
Keothavong responds with a rasping off-forehand winner for break point number two, but Safina comes up with an even better cross-court backhand. Keothavong earns the first cheer of the day when she chases down a drop shot and steers a forehand down the line, but Safina comes through a tough game.
Keothavong 0-2 * SafinaOh dear. The Safina power has the edge in the early exchanges, catching Keothavong flat-footed behind the baseline, and the Briton then double-faults to slip to 15-40. Safina converts her second break point when Keothavong nets a forehand and the crowd go wild. That last bit isn't true.
Keothavong * 0-1 SafinaIt's an encouraging start from a British point of view as Safina makes an error followed by a double-fault, but Keothavong cannot capitalise, swinging a forehand wide after being pegged back to 30-30 and taking the game.
* denotes next to serve 1010: "This year Safina has made $1.8m - three times Keothavong's career earnings. That puts into perspective how much of an underdog the British number one is, but it's a first-round encounter so anything can happen."
Sam Smith on the Red Button
1007: Dinara may be the world number one and tournament favourite but she is still a Safin, so there is hope for Keothavong. The Briton has upped the power in her groundstrokes over the last year and now has a serious forehand. A Marat-style wobbler from Dinara would not go amiss either.
1000: Safina and Keothavong make their way onto Court Philippe Chatrier, which as usual is not exactly straining to cope with the early morning crowds. No matter, it's still one of the biggest matches of our Anne's life and a high watermark in the recent mini revival of British women's tennis.
0955: Good morning and welcome, we are in for a cracker. Anne Keothavong is rewarded for her excellent efforts over the last year with a first-round match against world number one and tournament favourite Dinara Safina on Court Philippe Chatrier in a few minutes' time. After that we have her fellow Britons Mel South and Katie O'Brien, as well as Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Andy Roddick, Venus Williams, Maria Sharapova.... I would not be surprised to see Bjorn Borg taking on Sir Cliff Richard on an outside court, it's such a star-studded day. We laugh in the face of your 'Bank Holiday'.
