Safina gets to 40-0 and three match points but wastes the first two going for big winners, and nets on the third. Keothavong then gets a game point... but goes long. Safina misses her fourth match point with a long forehand. A second game point for Keothavong is dismissed by a Safina backhand, and the Russian finally ends the torture on her fifth match point with a forehand winner.
That was not pleasant for any of us, and there is no doubt Keothavong was completely outclassed, but Safina looked good and will be hard for anyone to stop.

Ker-thump! Safina buries a smash with ruthless efficiency but is soon chuntering away to herself after an error brings her to 30-30. She takes the game with some gentle overhead practice followed by a drop volley, as poor Keothavong races around like a ballgirl behind the baseline.

I can't look. Even the French are willing on the lonely Brit as Keothavong gets to 40-0 and then makes an error with a forehand followed by two double-faults. The racquet gets some abuse, understandably. Keothavong goes long with a backhand and we are two games from the end of this now.

1055: "Trust me, you do panic," says John Lloyd on the Red Button as he describes his feelings when he once trailed Jimmy Connors 6-0 6-0 2-0 in front of 12,000 people.

This is racing away alarmingly now, although Safina looks surprisingly furious when she puts a drop shot wide on her second break point. She takes it out on the next point, swiping a backhand into the corner. I am not going to mention bagels in any form, particularly 'double'.

The court has been swept, the sun is peeping out and the kettle is on. A fresh start all round. Except for Keothavong, who drops her seventh straight game as Safina powers through a love hold. The Russian gets a net cord on the last point.

At 15-15, Safina steps in on a second serve and absolutely crunches it down the line for a winner. She then climbs all over the next point to earn two set points, and takes it with a blistering forehand down the line. A great set from Safina and not a bad one from Keothavong. Honestly.

Keothavong is doing all the running but Safina nets a backhand to earn a break point. Safina steps up at the key moment with a huge backhand winner. "That's heavy," says John Lloyd on the Red Button.
