O'Brien is currently ranked 111th in the world |
Britain's Katie O'Brien will make her French Open debut after Russian sixth seed Vera Zvonareva pulled out injured. O'Brien, 23, lost 6-4 7-6 (8-6) to Arantxa Rus of the Netherlands in the final round of qualifying in Paris. But Zvonareva's ankle injury means the British number two now enters the main draw as a lucky loser and plays unseeded Olga Govortsova of Belarus. O'Brien joins British number one Anne Keothavong and Melanie South in the first round at Roland Garros. It is the first time since 1992 that three British women have featured in the French Open draw. Keothavong plays top seed Dinara Safina while South, who also qualified on ranking, meets qualifier Michelle Larcher de Brito. O'Brien, from Hull, will play in her second straight Grand Slam after qualifying for the Australian Open in January. She has put together an encouraging run of form recently, winning an ITF singles title and reaching the final of another. That has seen her improve her world ranking to 111 and overtake South as British number two. Zvonareva, the world number six, has not played since injuring her ankle at a tournament in Charleston in mid-April.
