Jankovic's victory was her first in five attempts against Li |
Jelena Jankovic booked her place in the Paris Open quarter finals with a 6-0 3-6 6-2 win over China's Li Na. After taking the first set in style, the Serbian world number three made heavy weather of closing out the match. Serena Williams has yet to drop a set at the event and dispatched the Croatian Karolina Sprem 6-1 6-2. Both players will face French opponents buoyed by home support in the next round, with Jankovic taking on Alize Cornet and Williams facing Emilie Loit. Jankovic's victory was her first in five attempts against Li on a hard court and she was pleased to have finally found a way past the 26-year-old. | 606: DEBATE |
"There are certain players who give you a hard time no matter what their ranking is. It's just their game and their style of play that doesn't kind of suit mine," she said. "But today I came out with a good tactic. I kept hitting the ball very deep and very hard and I took the initiative. She had trouble to play her game. She was always behind." Williams was on court for just under 59 minutes, winning all of her first-serve points, in a brutal demolition of an error-prone Sprem. "I played better than Wednesday but I have to say she did not play that well herself. I served very well, that went fine," she said. Cornet overcome inflamed shoulder tendons and the loss of the first set to progress at the expense of Daniela Hantuchova, 1-6 6-4 6-2. "I've had the experience from my previous matches against her. In the second set, her form always drops. I was on the look-out for an opening to rush into it and put her under pressure," she said. Amelie Mauresmo added to French success with a dominant performance in her 6-1 6-2 win over Romania's Monica Niculescu. She will face Agnieszka Radwanska in the last eight after the Pole won through in three sets against Alisa Kleybanova. Tournament number three Elena Dementieva is also through having beaten fellow Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-4 6-2. She will face Nathalie Dechy who became the fourth French player into the quarter-finals with a 3-6 6-4 6-3 upset of sixth seed Patty Schnyder.
