Keothavong and South will both feature in Friday's Australian Open draw |
Britain's Anne Keothavong and Melanie South both went out in their Australian Open warm-up events. British number one Keothavong lost 4-6 6-0 7-5 to France's Virginie Razzano at the Hobart International tournament. Keothavong's serve was broken for the eighth time in the final game as Razzano moved into the third round. South, meanwhile, was beaten 6-2 6-0 by eighth seed Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark in the second round of the Sydney International. British number two South, 22, will join 25-year-old Keothavong in Friday's main draw for the Australian Open, which starts next week. | 606: DEBATE |
Keothavong had shocked fifth seed Agnes Szavay of Hungary 6-3 7-5 in her opening round. "I didn't serve as well as I did yesterday (Monday), which let me down as I had more than my fair share of chances to win the match," Keothavong told her website. "I lost focus in the second set and it slipped away quickly from me, but even though I regrouped in the third it wasn't enough. "She played well though and I can still go to Melbourne feeling confident about my tennis and well prepared." Top seed Serena Williams and number two seed Dinara Safina both progressed with ease to the quarter-finals in Sydney. Williams beat Sara Errani of Italy 6-1 6-2 in 50 minutes in the Ken Rosewall Arena, while Safina defeated Russian compatriot Vera Dushevina 6-3 6-0 in just over an hour on Court One. Third seed Elena Dementieva won 6-2 6-4 against Jarmila Gajdosova of Slovakia, and fifth seed Svetlana Kuznetsova beat Estonia's Kaia Kanepi 6-2 2-6 7-6 (7-3).
