Robson suffers semi-final defeat

Robson's hopes were finally ended by Estonian Ani

Maret Ani ended Wimbledon junior champion Laura Robson's hopes in the semi-final of the LTA tournament in Shrewsbury with a 6-2 3-6 6-0 win.

Estonian Ani, 26, ranked 105th in the world, proved too strong in the decider against 14-year-old Robson.

The Briton was playing in her first professional event in the UK, having made her senior debut in Limoges, France, last week.

Robson must play one more senior event before she can get a world ranking.

This week she has enjoyed impressive wins over fellow Briton Sarah Borwell, world number 128 Urszula Radwanska, and 35-year-old Tzipi Obziler.

But second seed Ani proved too much for Robson, despite the British player winning five consecutive games to take the second set.

"I now know I can play with the women players but they have got so much more experience," said Robson, who earned 1,579.95 for her week's work.

"I'm still going to play juniors in the big events next year and just work my way into the women's tour because there is no rush at all."
