British duo into final qualifying

British number three South is currently ranked 138th in the world

Britain's Elena Baltacha and Melanie South are through to the final round of qualifying for the US Open.

Baltacha overcame seven double faults and numerous missed break points to defeat Carly Gullickson of the US 6-1 6-7 (2-7) 6-2 at Flushing Meadows.

South beat Youlia Fedossova 6-3 4-6 7-6 (8-6) despite 11 double faults and her French opponent hitting 11 aces.

Katie O'Brien lost 6-3 6-4 to American Alex Glatch and Josh Goodall went out 6-4 6-2 to Argentine Diego Hartfield.

O'Brien broke Glatch twice but had trouble on her own serve, failing to hold on five occasions as she was defeated in 88 minutes.

Goodall, the British men's number three, struggled with his first serve and only had one break point, which he failed to convert, while the more experienced Hartfield fired down 12 aces en route to a 65-minute victory.

South will face Shuai Zhang of China for a place in the main draw on Friday, while Baltacha takes on France's Julie Coin.
