Cavaday came close to beating Martina Hingis in 2007 |
Kent teenager Naomi Cavaday has been handed a glamorous tie against the defending champion Venus Williams in the first round of Wimbledon. Cavaday, 19, who received a wild card for the event, is guaranteed to play on Centre Court when Williams begins the defence of her title on Tuesday. Williams, who is seeded seventh, has won the women's event four times. But Cavaday had match point against former champion Martina Hingis in 2007 before losing in three sets. The British number five failed to qualify for this year's warm-up tournament at Eastbourne, but she did reach the second round of the DFS Classic in Birmingham, with a convincing win over American Jill Craybas.
