Federer will be aiming to win a sixth Wimbledon title next month |
Roger Federer bounced back from his French Open demolition to secure a 55th straight win on grass, beating Michael Berrer in Halle's Gerry Weber Open. Three days after Rafael Nadal beat him 6-1 6-3 6-0 at Roland Garros, the Swiss player looked sharp and only needed an hour to beat his German opponent. Federer lost only one point on serve in the first set, breaking at 4-4. Two further breaks in the second set saw him seal a 6-4 6-2 win to get his Wimbledon preparations on track. | 606: DEBATE | The win was Federer's 21st straight win at Halle, a streak that began in 2003, and his first four Wimbledon titles came after he won in Halle. Federer feels that the grasscourt season will help him forget the heavy defeat to Nadal. "It was very disappointing and it was a major blow but one may not forget that
it was a good week for me," he stated. "It might be true that the frustration is bigger than the positives but you don't have much time to think about it. "Either you get away from everything and arrive at Wimbledon and nobody will ask about the last match. "Or you get here, face the press about Paris and then your last match will have been
on grass and not clay. "I don't lose much energy about what happened. It is no problem," he insisted. "There is no time to feel sorry for yourself. You have to look ahead. "There is no point in wasting any energy thinking about the claycourt season. Wimbledon is
ahead and physically I am in good shape so I am very happy." Federer will now play qualifier Jan Vacek from the Czech Republic in Thursday's second round. "I have never played him before, so I want to figure him out early," he added. Elsewhere, defending champion Tomas Berdych was beaten by Robin Soderling 6-2 7-5. Second seed James Blake came from one set and one break down to edge
Germany's Benjamin Becker 4-6 7-5 6-3. Philipp Kohlschreiber slipped past Tommy Haas 7-5 5-7 7-6 (5), while Andreas Beck won another all-German duel against Mischa Zverev, 6-7 (5-7) 7-6 (7-5) 6-1.
