THIRD SET:

1853: "He started in the last round against Montanes and Federer at the moment is looking simply awesome."
Mark Petchey on BBCi

Federer 6-2 Ancic
Federer decides to liven things up with his first double fault of the match and a stinker of a forehand, but at 30-30 he hits a magnificent forehand winner and the match is his when Ancic puts a backhand wide. A superb display.

1849: "Sometimes I'm mesmerised by Federer's feet. I mean, he's a ballet dancer for a man of his size."
Barry Davies on BBC1

Federer 5-2 Ancic
It was fun while it lasted for Ancic. Federer gets the chance to restore the double break and does so when Ancic sticks a forehand into the net.

Federer 4-2 Ancic
Ancic has a glimmer of hope when he earns two break points, and after Federer saves the first the Swiss is wayward with a forehand on the second. Could this be the start of a remarkable comeback? I doubt it.

Federer 4-1 Ancic
Federer once thanked all his opponents for concentrating on his apparently weaker backhand when he was younger, as they helped make it a better shot. He might want to thank Ancic after this because it's been magnificent today, and he breaks to love.

Federer 3-1 Ancic
Either the crowd are getting used to this flow of winners or they're concentrating on the rain, but there is almost no reaction when Federer opens the game with two stunning backhand winners. And he holds to love, of course.

Federer 2-1 Ancic
Ancic looks like stopping the rot but lets a 40-0 lead slip, and Federer gets to break point with a backhand winner down the line. However, he misses with a forehand on break point and Ancic hangs on.

Federer 2-0 Ancic
More brilliance form the world number one, who is enjoying the drop shot today. A love game.

Federer 1-0 Ancic
Ancic changes from a white to a red t-shirt but it will take more than a change of clothes to save him, you feel. A superb drop shot from Federer kicks the game off and he soon gets to 0-40. One set point goes begging but Federer gets the break in the following point when Ancic nets a backhand.

1823: "That set of tennis was virtually flawless."
Mark Petchey on BBCi

SECOND SET:

Replay: Federer's amazing forehand against Ancic

Federer 6-4 Ancic
The set finishes on a high point for everyone but Ancic - an epic rally with both players having the upper hand at times until Federer steps around a backhand and belts a forehand into the opposite corner. Some people are standing for that one.

1820: Apparently those in the VIP areas are heading for cover, although I'd venture to suggest that they're not the hardiest of souls.

Federer 5-4 Ancic
Ancic is hanging on at 15-30 and wisely starts to focus on the Federer backhand. He battles back to take the game with a sweeping cross-court forehand. Mark Petchey on BBCi mentions the word "umbrellas" but we'll ignore that.

Federer 5-3 Ancic
Federer holds to love for the third time in the set and he looks supreme at the moment.

Federer 4-3 Ancic
The calm is interrupted by a bout of industrial language from Ancic as he slips to 0-30. Federer steps in a and slices a return down the line which floats agonisingly past Ancic at the net for 15-40. A long rally ensues, and Federer takes it with a searing forehand winner on the run followed by a "C'mon!" That's the sort of shot that every park player dreams of making just once.

Federer 3-3 Ancic
Another service game, another love game. Not much to report at the moment. Weather looks nice.

Federer 2-3 Ancic
Ancic responds with a love game of his own and it's pretty low-key stuff right now. Federer beat Ancic in three comfortable sets in the quarter-finals at Roland Garros two years ago and I wouldn't bet against a repeat.

Federer 2-2 Ancic
At last a moment of Federer magic - while moving backwards he smacks a forehand down the line and it lands plum on the baseline. Breathtaking. He holds to love.

Federer 1-2 Ancic
A thumping great forehand sends Federer the wrong way to close out a solid service game to 15.

Federer 1-1 Ancic
Federer is in cruise control on serve at the moment and sliding about with abandon around the baseline. Ancic can't make much impression at the moment.

Federer 0-1 Ancic
There are danger signs for Ancic as Federer slides into the net and punches away a backhand volley for 0-30. Ancic gets back to 30-30 and then scrambles a backhand winner down the line past the onrushing Federer. A good hold.

Meanwhile, over on Court Suzanne Lenglen, Ivan Ljubicic completes a quite stunning comeback from two sets down to beat fourth seed Nikolay Davydenko. Nikolay won't like that.

1748: "Ancic is never going to give up but the big question is can he hold on to his serve, so when the opportunities come around Federer will feel the pressure."
Mark Petchey on BBCi

FIRST SET:

Federer 6-3 Ancic
Having earlier praised the Ancic volleys, he opens this game with a dodgy one that lands in the tram lines. Federer thumps down a couple of service winners and wraps up the set with relative ease. Lovely to watch but lacking in tension so far.

Federer 5-3 Ancic
Ancic stays in touch with a comfortable service game to 15 but it may be too late for this set.

Federer 5-2 Ancic
After doing all the hard work, Federer throws in a sloppy game and loses three straight points from 30-0. He then comes up with a wrong-footing forehand that leaves Ancic stranded. The Swiss takes the game with a backhand steered down the line that gets him out of trouble after a rather dodgy drop shot.

Federer 4-2 Ancic
A couple of beautiful volleys get Ancic back on track and serve notice that he should be a real challenger at Wimbledon this year. Goran Ivanisevic is convinced that his compatriot will win it one day, but he might be biased.

1732: "Federer is just a truly remarkable tennis player, athlete and sportsman. Ancic hasn't done badly but Federer just has a little too much for the Croatian."
Mark Petchey on BBCi

Federer 4-1 Ancic
And moments later Federer has made it eight points in a row and consolidated the break.

Federer 3-1 Ancic
He's looking dangerous already, Federer. The world number one steps up a gear from 0-30 and reels off four straight points to break.

Federer 2-1 Ancic
It's already a nice match to watch, with both players swatting away on both sides - Ancic takes a huge wind up for his forehand. From 30-30, Federer fires down a service winner and big off-forehand to take the game.

Federer 1-1 Ancic
Ancic is in trouble at 0-30 but wins a lengthy rally when Federer loses patience and pulls a backhand wide, and the Croatian goes on to hold. Barry Davis on BBCi thinks he spots General de Gaulle in the crowd. One for the kids there.

Federer 1-0 Ancic
Federer holds to love in the opening game, despite one bizarre bunt of a forehand that's so poor a surprised Ancic smacks it long.

1715: Federer and Ancic are knocking up on Court Philippe Chatrier. Meanwhile, the office goes into meltdown as David Beckham is named England captain, AC Milan reveal an approach for Carlo Ancelotti from Chelsea, and Wasps win the Guinness Premiership all at the same time. That's woken the news desk up.

1707: Hello and welcome to our coverage of Roger Federer against Mario 'the last man to beat Federer at Wimbledon' Ancic. It looked like the pick of the men's matches when the day started but we've already had a couple of crackers in Hewitt v Ferrer and Wawrinka v Gonzalez.

That Wimbledon win, back in the first round in 2002, was Ancic's only victory against the world number one in five attempts. Still, the Croatian has been finding some form this year after missing much of 2007 with glandular fever and his attacking game should at least pose a different challenge for Federer.
