Henin was hammered by Serena Williams in her last match in Miami

World number one Justine Henin returned to winning ways at the German Open in her first match for a month.

The Belgian swept aside Yung-Jan Chan of Chinese Taipei 6-0 6-2 in just over an hour to reach the third round.

"It has almost been one year since I last played on clay and I want to keep that kind of intensity for the rest of the week," Henin said afterwards.

Defending champion Ana Ivanovic, third seed Svetlana Kuznetsova and fourth seed Jelena Jankovic also won through.

Ivanovic came through a tough first set against Akgul Amanmuradova, who replaced injured Amelie Mauresmo in the draw, to progress 7-6 6-2.

"I definitely didn't perform well. She's very tall, she has a strong serve and they kicked high. It took me time to get used to them," she commented.

Ivanovic next faces Sybille Bammer, but the main obstacle to her chances of repeating last year's success is Serena Williams.

"For sure, Serena is playing really well, she is on top of her game and 100% fit. I didn't see her game on Tuesday, but I would love to play her," she added.

Kuzentsova saw off Catalina Castano 6-3-6-2, Jankovic made her class tell after a tough start as she beat Peng Shuai 7-5 6-0, but sixth seed Anna Chakvetadze tumbled out in the second round as she was upset 1-6 7-6 (7-1) 6-4 by Belarusian Victoria Azarenka.
