Third seed Anna Chakvetadze was sent crashing out of the Family Circle Cup by Romanian teenager Sorana Cirstea. The world number 86 handed the Russian a 6-2 1-6 6-2 second-round defeat. She won a three-set match against America's Vania King in Charleston on Monday. "She just pushed the ball back and I made mistakes," said a disappointed Chakvetadze, who had a first-round bye. Spanish 14th seed Anabel Medina Garrigues was beaten 4-6 6-0 7-5 by Tatiana Perebiynis of the Ukraine.
Dutch 16th seed Michaella Krajicek also lost, going out 6-3 3-6 6-4 to Alize Cornet of France in the first round. Slovak 15th seed Dominika Cibulkova retired with a lower back injury while trailing 6-4 1-0 in the first round against Russian Anastasia Rodionova. Top seed Jelena Jankovic of Serbia and Russian second seed Maria Sharapova received first-round byes and will play on Wednesday.
