Britons close on Melbourne places
Jamie Baker
Baker was watched by Davis Cup captain John Lloyd
Britons Jamie Baker and Katie O'Brien are each just one game away from qualifying for the Australian Open.

O'Brien, the British number one, was forced into a third set by Belgian Yanina Wickmayer before prevailing 6-4 3-6 8-6 in Melbourne.

British number three Baker survived the ferocious hitting of Austria's Alexander Peya to win 6-4 7-6 (7-4).

O'Brien must beat China's Meng Yuan to progress to the main draw while Baker must beat Austria's Daniel Koellerer.

Davis Cup captain John Lloyd was among the crowd watching Baker's late-night victory.

606: DEBATE

Lloyd must decide whether to pick Baker or Alex Bogdanovic - who lost to German Simon Stadler in the second round of qualifying - for next month's Davis Cup tie with Argentina.

"It was a tough match, Peya is a tricky player but I thought Jamie's attitude was spot on and he really deserved that win," said Lloyd.
