Gilbert joined up with the LTA in July last year

Gilbert was paid a reported salary of �750,000 per year by the LTA to coach Murray and to work on other programmes, including taking tennis camps.

The LTA must now decide whether to retain Gilbert in order to work with Britain's lower-ranked players.

"We are reviewing the situation," said LTA chief executive Roger Draper.

"We will look to make a decision in the near future."

Gilbert, who has previously worked with former world number ones Andre Agassi and Andy Roddick, teamed up with Murray in July 2006 after signing a three-year deal.

As well as coaching Murray, his role included "helping to raise the playing and coaching standards in the UK", working with players and the LTA's network of coaches and its high-performance clubs and academies.

And Mark Petchey, a former coach of Murray, believes the 46-year-old American should be used to guide other British players.

"If he was just working for the LTA, I see that as a great opportunity for Alex Bogdanovic or Jamie Baker to have Brad full time," Petchey told BBC Sport.

"They've budgeted for it - it's off the scale in terms of the wage that needed to be paid but it was, so why not give those two guys to Brad?

"You get the feeling that won't happen but who knows?"
