Henman opts for a last-ditch Hawkeye challenge - but loses it. Tsonga, playing for the first time at the US Open, is showing no nerves as he earns match point. Henman saves it and hangs on.

So, is this the end of Tiger Tim? The hankies will be coming out all over the home counties as Tsonga edges to within one game of ending Henman's Grand Slam career.

Henman 2-4 Tsonga
Tsonga continues his serving onslaught and holds to 15, clinching the game with a clever forehand after a long and tactical rally. I think I can spot a fat lady in the crowd and she's opening her mouth, about to sing...
"James, it'll be worse, I fear. Dare I say it, he might very well lose it in four...

"Oh no... I see where this is going: another false hope, second round, five-set defeat... It's Wimbledon again!"

Third set:
Henman 5-7 Tsonga
Henman comes up with a couple of masterstrokes to go 0-30 up on Tsonga's serve. But the young Frenchman holds his nerve, a 138mph serve taking him to set point. Henman lashes a forehand pass but Tsonga takes the set with a brilliant backhand stop volley off his shoelaces.
Henman 5-6 Tsonga
A great lob from Tsonga puts Henman 15-30 down but the 32-year-old then comes up with a brilliant ace. However, Tsonga lashes a forehand return down the line to earn a break point and clinches the break with a superbly-worked point that ends with an emphatic forehand volley at the net.
Henman 5-5 Tsonga
We could be heading towards another tie-break as Tsonga produces some more solid serving. He has dropped just four points on serve so far in this set.
Henman 5-4 Tsonga
Still no break points in this set as Henman moves to within one game of clinching it. Some of the crowd are trying to whip up a bit of atmosphere but there are still plenty of empty seats.
"This match is so close! I think we're going to be waiting up a long time for this. C'mon, Tim, I'm tired!
Tom by text on 81111 Tired?! This match could be part of history in the making as Henman progresses towards the US Open title. Maybe I'm a bit over-tired, too...
Henman 4-4 Tsonga
Tsonga's level is dipping up and down while Henman's is more constant. They're still neck-and-neck in the set, though, as the Frenchman closes out his service game.
Henman 4-3 Tsonga
Tsonga ends up in the first row of the crowd after chasing down a Henman shot. It doesn't prevent him losing the game, though.
Henman 3-3 Tsonga
Tsonga bangs down his fourth ace to level in the third set.
"It's going to be a typical nail-biting match, but Tim has more class and will win in four sets. There's more to come from the Tiger yet!"

Henman 3-2 Tsonga
Tsonga has a couple of glimpses of chances but Henman copes, even dealing with a double net-cord from the Frenchman.
Henman 2-2 Tsonga
Tsonga holds. The match is finely poised.
Henman 2-1 Tsonga
Henman rips through his service game without dropping a point. Can he keep the momentum going? That's a rhetorical question, by the way.
Henman 1-1 Tsonga
Tsonga stops the rot of five straight games by holding to 15.
Henman 1-0 Tsonga
Henman's looking pretty secure on serve now - he's the man, as the spectators are no doubt saying to each other in the Louis Armstrong Stadium right now.
Second set:
Henman 6-2 Tsonga
A real turnaround as Henman earns himself a couple of set points as Tsonga crumbles - the Frenchman nets an easy volley to gift Henman the second set.
Henman 5-2 Tsonga
Unlike in the first set, Henman is able to consolidate his break by holding serve.
Henman 4-2 Tsonga
Clearly what I said in the previous game has filtered into Henman's psyche as he races to 0-40 on Tsonga's serve. A brilliant approach shot then forces an error from the Frenchman's backhand and Henman has the break.
Henman 3-2 Tsonga
Henman ends his service game with a couple of confident points - including an ace - but his serve still looks more vulnerable than that of his opponent's.
Henman 2-2 Tsonga
Tsonga wraps up another comfortable service game with a terrific backhand pass.
Henman 2-1 Tsonga
For a chunky chap, Tsonga is pretty nippy around the court and he is chasing down a lot of Henman's attempts to put volleys away. Henman goes wide with a backhand volley and Tsonga has his first breka point of the second set. Henman digs himself out of danger - and the unconvincing pumped fist gesture comes out for the first time in the match. It does the trick as Henman holds.
Henman 1-1 Tsonga
Tsonga double-faults for the first time in the match on the opening point of the game but manages to hold comfortably.
Henman 1-0 Tsonga
Well, we've already had one marathon today in the Louis Armstrong Stadium with Novak Djokovic and Radek Stepanek slugging it out for nearly five hours. And Henman is going to have to dig deep to turn this around. Mind you, Tsonga hails from Le Mans so presumably is used to endurance sports. Henman holds in the opening game.
First set:
Henman 6-7 (2-7) Tsonga
Henman's unhappy with a call and has a bit of a rant at the poor old umpire - hasn't he heard of the new Hawkeye technology? He's looking distinctly fed up and Tsonga gets his nose ahead in the tie-break. Another double-fault and soon Henman is facing four set points. The Frenchman whips up a cross-court winner and has the first set in the bag.
Henman 6-6 Tsonga
Here we go again... Henman double-faults on the opening point of the game and then nets a straightforward volley to hand Tsonga a set point. A good serve saves the day... until Henman floats a backhand wide. The British number two puts his second serve right on the line - and it is enough to hang in and force a tiebreak.
Henman 5-6 Tsonga
Tsonga's serve is really firing now but a couple of times, Henman manages to set himself up in a point, only to fluff the final shot. It's an easy hold for Tsonga. Having served for the first set, Henman will now serve to stay in it.
Henman 5-5 Tsonga
Vintage Henman - double faults and then goes 0-40 down. Tsonga breaks straight back - the perfect counter-punch.
Henman 5-4 Tsonga
Tsonga fancies himself as the Muhammad Ali of tennis but it's Henman who lands the first blow in this match, breaking on his first opportunity (I've been waiting nine games to write that...) Tsonga's pass down the line drifts just wide - as proved by Hawkeye when the Frenchman appeals. Henman then clinches the break with a pass of his own.
Henman 4-4 Tsonga
Henman wraps up his service game with his first ace. There are loads of empty seats in the Louis Armstrong Stadium - shame as it's been a good first set so far.
Henman 3-4 Tsonga
Tsonga's first love service game sees him nudge ahead in the set.
Henman 3-3 Tsonga
Henman double-faults to face another break point but a well-placed serve digs him out of trouble.

Henman 2-2 Tsonga
Tsonga gets the first break point of the match but our Tim comes through the test with some solid serving.
"Dare I say Henman looks the better player already?"

Henman 1-2 Tsonga
Now it's Tsonga's turn to enjoy a straightforward service game.
Henman 1-1 Tsonga
Great start for Henman, winning his first service game to love. The Briton zaps down a 124mph serve that has Tsonga scrambling for cover.
Henman 0-1 Tsonga
There's a bit of a breeze swirling around the Louis Armstrong Stadium as Tsonga begins erratically, finally winning the game with a beefy crosscourt forehand.
Tim Henman is attempting to prolong his Grand Slam career against world number 74 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
The 22-year-old Frenchman is on the rise, having reached the fourth round at Wimbledon.
In contrast, Henman, who announced earlier this month that he would retire in September, has had a nightmare season.
The 32-year-old has been plagued by a back problem and has won just six matches on the men's tour in 2007.
But he managed to upset Dmitry Tursunov in the first round - can he survive to fight another day?
