French Open Third round result:
J JANKOVIC Ser v V WILLIAMS US
6-4 4-6 6-1
GAME-BY-GAME UPDATES:
Jankovic 6-4 4-6 6-1 Williams
And there is no way back. It's a rather dismal end for Williams, who dumps a backhand into the net after another punishing rally at 15-40. A well-deserved win for Jankovic - who probably won't be a dark horse for the title now.
Jankovic 6-4 4-6 5-1 Williams
Venus might be the ultimate battler but it's hard to see a way back from this. She puts a return almost into the back netting to put Jankovic within a game of the fourth round.
Jankovic 6-4 4-6 4-1 Williams
Rally of the match so far as Jankovic digs out a lovely little backhand volley to win a rare net exchange. It puts her on course for another break point as Venus tops 40 on the unforced errors. She wastes it by netting a backhand return but Williams hands her another chance with a double fault and Jankovic takes it with glea. All gone horribly wrong for Venus.
Jankovic 6-4 4-6 3-1 Williams
A clever wrong-footing forehand from Jankovic puts her 40-0 up and she wraps up a love service game when Williams goes long on the return. Great recovery from the Serb this. Pressure all on Venus.
"I think it really helped Jankovic that although she didn't win the second set, she took back some of the momentum from Williams at the end."
BBC Sport analyst Sam Smith
Jankovic 6-4 4-6 2-1 Williams
A terrifying scream from Venus as she puts a tired backhand into the net- giving Jankovic two break points. Jankovic takes the second. Now she just has to hold serve and she's into the fourth round. Easy.
Jankovic 6-4 4-6 1-1 Williams
Venus wears a grimace of determination with every point she wins. Only two grimaces in that game though as Jankovic levels things up.
"Venus may have taken that game but there's not a lot in it now. They're both playing somewhere near the level they need to win this match."
BBC Sport analyst Sam Smith
Jankovic 6-4 4-6 0-1 Williams
Williams has the advantage of serving first again and she looks in trouble at 0-30, but a run of four points in a row - helped by some Jankovic errors - gets her out of trouble. Jankovic almost does the splits as she scrambles for a wide ball on the last point - it's painful to watch.
Second set
Jankovic 6-4 4-6 Williams
Williams' forehand might just hold the key to this match. After winning the first point, the American goes long and hands the initiative back to Jankovic. But a winner off the same wing gives Venus her third set point and she takes it when Jankovic floats a backhand over the baseline.
Jankovic 6-4 4-5 Williams
Best game of the match so far. Jankovic shows a bit of variety, sending up a lob then eventually putting away the volley. That gives her two break-back points and Williams responds by netting a forehand. The match is really living up to its billing now - it's a belter.
Jankovic 6-4 3-5 Williams
Good effort from Jankovic, saving two set points with some brave hitting. The real battle starts now though.
Jankovic 6-4 2-5 Williams
Jankovic might be beginning to wonder if this is her day. The Serb sees two forehands go millimetres long and at 40-0, Venus' forehand clips the net and dribbles over.
Jankovic 6-4 2-4 Williams
Great stuff from Williams. She's still breathing very heavily but she wins an epic rally on break point to recover the advantage.
Jankovic 6-4 2-3 Williams
Disastrous game from Venus - who really looks like she's struggling physically. She flips a forehand wide and we're back on serve.
Jankovic 6-4 1-3 Williams
With Venus finding a bit of consistency, Jankovic is having to take a few risks and it's paying off. The Serb gets on the board in this set with her first ace of the match. Some long rallies have left Venus huffing and puffing a bit.
Jankovic 6-4 0-3 Williams
And then my brain suffered a system failure and I got the score the wrong way round. I think we're back on track now. So is Venus. Jankovic forces the first deuce of the match but Williams escapes.
Jankovic 6-4 0-2 Williams
Apologies for that, folks. The entire BBC network just crashed as Venus was breaking for the first time in this match.
Jankovic 6-4 0-1 Williams
Williams kicks off the second set in much better style than the first, holding to 15.
First set:
"Jankovic has got a first serve percentage of 83% - that's amazing. It means Venus is hardly getting a look at a second serve. But Jankovic is playing quite conservatively, waiting for the errors, and I don't know if she will continue to get away with that."
BBC Sport analyst Sam Smith
Jankovic 6-4 Williams
No sign of nerves there. Jankovic keeps peppering Williams' shaky forehand and it pays off. A love service game puts the fourth seed in control.
Jankovic 5-4 Williams
Venus hits 200kph on serve for the first time today, but it's out. She holds to 15 and makes Jankovic serve for the first set.
Jankovic 5-3 Williams
This is unlike any women's match I've seen for a while. We haven't had a sniff of a break point since the first game. Jankovic delivers the first double fault of the day but it's at 40-15 and Venus' forehand error hands the Serb the game.
Jankovic 4-3 Williams
Venus is in full scream now and the noise is echoing around the near-empty stadium. Must be a bit intimidating for Jankovic. This is much better from Venus, who must be ruing her slow start now.
Jankovic 4-2 Williams
You can see why Jankovic has had so much success of late. She hits a very deep, heavy ball and makes precious few errors. Venus belts a backhand long and Jankovic hangs on to her break.
Jankovic 3-2 Williams
Venus broke the record for the fastest serve by a woman at a Grand Slam in the last round - at 206kph. She's already into the 190s in this match. Can she beat the overall record of 209, held by Brenda Schultz-McCarthy?
Jankovic 3-1 Williams
Smart serving from Jankovic earns her a love hold and puts the pressure on her opponent. Still hardly a soul in the stadium.
Jankovic 2-1 Williams
She's awake now. One brutal backhand almost knocks Jankovic off her feet.
Jankovic 2-0 Williams
Jankovic holds easily. Venus needs to wake up quickly or this set will be done and dusted.
Jankovic 1-0 Williams
Trademark start from Venus: error-strewn. A backhand into the net hands Jankovic the early break. The Serb actually won the toss and elected to return - and the tactic paid off.
1013: Venus to serve.
1008: Jelena Jankovic is the French Open dark horse - although that sounds a bit odd given that she's seeded four. Marion Bartoli or Elena Dementieva await in the next round. Dementieva won a title heading into Roland Garros so she's also got dark horse status.
"The French Open organisers have taken a lot of criticism so far but you have to ask why is this match first on court? It's the best-looking match of the day in either draw and there's no one here to see it."
BBC Sport analyst Sam Smith
1004: Mark Woodforde conducts the interviews before the players head onto court. "I'm ready to challenge anything," says Venus. "I'm excited." Searching stuff.
0957: We're still waiting for the players on Court Philippe Chatrier. Weather is cloudy - but most importantly, dry. As usual, we've got a crowd of about 12 for the day's first match.
