And there is no way back. It's a rather dismal end for Williams, who dumps a backhand into the net after another punishing rally at 15-40. A well-deserved win for Jankovic - who probably won't be a dark horse for the title now.

Venus might be the ultimate battler but it's hard to see a way back from this. She puts a return almost into the back netting to put Jankovic within a game of the fourth round.

Rally of the match so far as Jankovic digs out a lovely little backhand volley to win a rare net exchange. It puts her on course for another break point as Venus tops 40 on the unforced errors. She wastes it by netting a backhand return but Williams hands her another chance with a double fault and Jankovic takes it with glea. All gone horribly wrong for Venus.

Williams has the advantage of serving first again and she looks in trouble at 0-30, but a run of four points in a row - helped by some Jankovic errors - gets her out of trouble. Jankovic almost does the splits as she scrambles for a wide ball on the last point - it's painful to watch.

Second set

Williams' forehand might just hold the key to this match. After winning the first point, the American goes long and hands the initiative back to Jankovic. But a winner off the same wing gives Venus her third set point and she takes it when Jankovic floats a backhand over the baseline.

Best game of the match so far. Jankovic shows a bit of variety, sending up a lob then eventually putting away the volley. That gives her two break-back points and Williams responds by netting a forehand. The match is really living up to its billing now - it's a belter.

This is unlike any women's match I've seen for a while. We haven't had a sniff of a break point since the first game. Jankovic delivers the first double fault of the day but it's at 40-15 and Venus' forehand error hands the Serb the game.

Venus is in full scream now and the noise is echoing around the near-empty stadium. Must be a bit intimidating for Jankovic. This is much better from Venus, who must be ruing her slow start now.

You can see why Jankovic has had so much success of late. She hits a very deep, heavy ball and makes precious few errors. Venus belts a backhand long and Jankovic hangs on to her break.

Venus broke the record for the fastest serve by a woman at a Grand Slam in the last round - at 206kph. She's already into the 190s in this match. Can she beat the overall record of 209, held by Brenda Schultz-McCarthy?

1008: Jelena Jankovic is the French Open dark horse - although that sounds a bit odd given that she's seeded four. Marion Bartoli or Elena Dementieva await in the next round. Dementieva won a title heading into Roland Garros so she's also got dark horse status.
