Jankovic will face Italy's Mara Santangelo in the next round |
Serbia's Jelena Jankovic made short work of reaching the last 16 of the Family Circle Cup as she swept to a 6-1 6-1 win over Anastassia Rodionova. Jankovic was in complete command against the Russian qualifier, with the biggest threat coming from the occasional rain delays in Charleston.
"I thought I played quite well for my first match, especially with it starting to rain," she said.
Meanwhile, the unseeded Venus Williams thrashed Vasilisa Bardina 6-2 6-1.
Williams took just 49 minutes to complete the straightforward win, on a day when the more established players came out well on top.
"I definitely feel like my game is coming around," said Williams. "I'm playing good tennis.
"I think the only thing that holds me back sometimes is my errors. Sometimes I make a few too many errors, and that has been my issue the last two tournaments."
Fourth seed Dinara Safina beat Eleni Daniilidou 6-3 6-4, while France's Tatiana Golovin destroyed American veteran Jill Craybas 6-0 6-1.
