Davydenko was making his doubles debut alongside Andreev

After Mikhail Youzhny's epic singles win over Richard Gasquet on Friday, Igor Andreev and Nikolay Davydenko followed suit in the doubles rubber.

The Russian pair won 3-6 7-5 6-3 3-6 6-3 against Sebastien Grosjean and Michael Llodra.

In other ties, Germany, Sweden and the USA secured semi-final places.

Alexander Waske and Michael Kohlmann defeated Belgium's Christophe Rochus and Olivier Rochus 4-6 6-2 6-3 6-1 in Ostend to give Germany an unassailable 3-0 lead.

"We're unbelievably happy to get it over with," said Waske. "After the win over Croatia we thought we had a great chance to make it into the semi-finals."

Veterans Jonas Bjorkman and Thomas Johansson ensured a superb win for Sweden with a 4-6 7-6 (7-4) 6-2 6-3 defeat of Argentina's Guillermo Canas and David Nalbandian.

"Naturally, it's fantastic," said Sweden captain Mats Wilander. "The guys have played incredibly well, delivering at home after seven ties on the road. This is a team victory."

In Moscow, Marat Safin had been expected to play doubles but his team said he had a slight foot injury and he was replaced by Davydenko.

"It was a difficult match," said Andreev. "We put up a fight and the French maybe started getting nervous. We had a few chances and we used them."

Davydenko, who made his Davis Cup doubles debut, said: "We play more like two singles than one doubles and we play it very well. We understand each other."
