Kuerten has only played four matches since September 2005 |
Three-time French Open champion Gustavo Kuerten beat Filippo Volandri 6-3 6-1 at the Brasil Open to earn his first win in nearly two years. Kuerten has had a long battle with injury after hip surgery in 2004 and had not won since Brazil played Uruguay in the Davis Cup in September 2005.
His victory over Volandri was his fourth match since that last win.
"I knew it was just a matter of time. I'm improving physically and this win should give me confidence," he said.
"I was able to serve well and maintained a good rhythm."
Kuerten is now ranked 1,076th and was handed a wildcard for the tournament.
Despite his lack of match practice he served 13 aces against his opponent who is ranked more than 1000 places above him.
