Hingis has overtaken Lindsay Davenport for Pan Pacific titles |
Martina Hingis beat Ana Ivanovic 6-4 6-2 to claim a record fifth Pan Pacific Open title in Tokyo. After winning in 1997, 1999, 2000 and 2002, Hingis lost to Elena Dementieva in last year's final.
But against Ivanovic she was able to dominate from the back of the court as she coasted to victory.
"I'm very proud of my record here," said the 26-year-old Swiss star. "I knew going into this match that I could make the record if I won."
It was only the second meeting between the two players after Ivanovic's 6-2 6-3 victory over Hingis in the 2006 Montreal final.
One break was enough for Hingis to take the first set and she then opened a 4-0 lead in the second and was able to cruise home.
"You have to be strong if you want to survive in today's tennis," Hingis added.
"I knew coming back that I needed to get better physically and I feel I have made a lot of improvement."
