GAME-BY-GAME UPDATES

By Piers Newbery

Third set:

Gonzalez 6-1 Haas
A double fault from an understandably beaten looking Haas is followed by a wild forehand and Gonzalez gets two match points. He hits an appropriately stunning backhand winner to complete a truly remarkable performance, and Federer might just face a contest on Sunday.

Gonzalez 5-1 Haas
Well, no sign of nerves yet. Gonzalez opens with two aces before Haas challenges a line call that said his forehand was out. It wasn't. A bit of exhibition stuff follows as Gonzalez plays a shot between his legs, but even he can't pull that one off. He still holds though and the end is in sight for Haas.

Gonzalez 4-1 Haas
Blimey. I might have to start up a Fernando Gonzalez website if this carries on. The first point sees him hit a running forehand winner down the line. He repeats it on the following point, only this time bends it around Haas, who looks ready to kill someone. Gonzalez converts his second point and lets out a healthy "Vamos!"

Gonzalez 3-1 Haas
Everybody - and especially Haas - is waiting for Gonzalez to suffer even a slight dip in form but for the moment the 10th seed remains on full power. He holds to 15.

Gonzalez 2-1 Haas
A good game from Haas keeps him alive but he then calls for the trainer, who applies something to the back of his thigh. Whatever it is, it better be good.

Gonzalez 2-0 Haas
Maybe it's lack of sleep after too many night shifts, I don't know, but I think Gonzalez could maybe, just maybe, beat Federer. There, I've said it. He's just getting better and better. Two outrageous forehand winners help him to another easy hold.

Gonzalez 1-0 Haas
A change of shirt from Haas sees the German resplendent in luminous yellow. It does absolutely no good whatsoever. Gonzalez hits a searing backhand cross-court winner on his way to two break points, and Haas sticks a backhand into the net on the second. Game over?

Second set:

Gonzalez 6-3 Haas
No we don't, no we don't, no we don't - at least as far as Haas is concerned. Gonzalez drops the first point but remains fiercely positive in everything he does, hitting hard from the baseline and coming to the net at every opportunity. Four points in a row and the set is his.

Gonzalez 5-3 Haas
Haas keeps the set alive with a love-service game, finished off by a beautiful backhand winner, and forces Gonzalez to serve out for a two-set lead. "Here we go, here we go, here we go..." sing the Haas fans, optimistically.

Gonzalez 5-2 Haas
Gonzalez shows he's not all about power with a delicate drop volley and a backhand smash before smacking down an ace as he holds serve to love, and there's no sign of a let-up yet.

Gonzalez 4-2 Haas
Everybody ducks when Haas is foot-faulted on the first point but he does not take the bait, rather disappointingly. Instead he plays a regulation service game and holds to 15.

Gonzalez 4-1 Haas
Haas is reaching boiling point. At 15-30 he gets a rare glimpse of a chance but misses a forehand and goes to smash his racquet on the Rebound Ace before thinking better of it. At deuce, Gonzalez gets out of trouble with a drive volley and a big serve.

Gonzalez 3-1 Haas
Haas opens the game by missing a smash that Gonzalez had given up on - an incredulous umpire tells the German, "you know that was out don't you?" That doesn't do the German's mood much good but he recovers to hold serve and stay in touch, just about.

Gonzalez 3-0 Haas
I may have suggested earlier that this would be more competitive than England's attempt to play cricket against Australia. It seems I was a little hasty. Although comparing Haas to Flintoff and co is harsh on the German, who is just facing a blizzard of winners. Gonzalez holds to love.

Gonzalez 2-0 Haas
For this set the Haas fans have unveiled a new song: "Tommy Haas, Tommy Haas, Tommy Haas.... Tommy Haas, Tommy Haas, Tommy Haas..." You get the picture. It does not do their man much good as he balloons a forehand long at 30-30 and then double faults, before screaming the one German word I know very loudly.

Gonzalez 1-0 Haas
In fairness to Haas, he is not capitulating, he's just facing a man in unbelievable form. Gonzalez throws in one running forehand cross-court pass that draws gasps from the crowd but Haas does well to force deuce. The first Hawkeye challenge of the day goes in favour of Gonzalez, who goes on to hold.

First set:

Gonzalez 6-1 Haas
Haas gingerly approaches the net at one stage and Gonzalez thumps a forehand at his head. The German takes evasive action and may think twice about trying that tactic again. At 30-30 yet another break is looming and we get the first outburst of, presumably, very bad language from Haas. At deuce, Gonzalez chips and charges before putting away a round-arm smash a la Jimmy Connors. A backhand pass follows and that's that - what a set from Gonzalez.

Gonzalez 5-1 Haas
A love-service game and it's awesome stuff from Gonzo at the moment.

Gonzalez 4-1 Haas
Haas is in trouble again at 0-30 after Gonzalez skips around his backhand and unleashes the off-forehand that has become one of the shots of the tournament. The Chilean gets two break points and wallops a backhand return past Haas to break again. "Ole, ole, ole, ole...Chile, Chile," shout his supporters. Quite.

Gonzalez 3-1 Haas
"Let's go Tommy, let's go," shout the German's travelling support. Repeatedly. And he does, getting to 15-30 ahead with two backhand winners. Gonzalez tries a bit of serve-volleying, with mixed results, but takes the game with a wrong-footing forehand pass.

Gonzalez 2-1 Haas
Anything Federer can do.. Gonzalez can do harder. The Chilean moves to 0-40 up with the help of a couple of blistering winners and it's 11 points without reply. Haas does well to haul himself back into the set by saving three break points, the last with his favourite shot - a backhand down the line. The German holds and even at this stage that could be a big moment.

Gonzalez 2-0 Haas
Gonzalez has picked up where he left off against Rafael Nadal in the last round, sweeping through a love-service game. The famously tetchy Haas already has a face like thunder.

Gonzalez 1-0 Haas
The match opens with a lengthy rally ended by a thumping Gonzalez smash. The Chilean then draws Haas into the net with some clever sliced backhands and smacks a forehand past him. Two Haas errors and Gonzalez has an immediate break. Impressive.

  • Welcome to what should be the most competitive sporting event in Australia today by some distance.

Gonzalez and Haas are both one win away from a first Grand Slam final and the dubious honour of taking on world number one Roger Federer on Sunday. The pair have met only once, with Gonzalez winning on clay two years ago.

Key factors today should be the Gonzalez forehand and his tendency to go for winners from everywhere, and the Haas backhand and his tendency to get in an almighty sulk and start swearing.
