Mauresmo beat Justine Henin-Hardenne in last year's Australian Open final |
Australian Open champion Amelie Mauresmo was beaten in the last eight of the Sydney International by Serbia's Jelena Jankovic on Wednesday. Jankovic followed up her win in the Auckland Classic with a 7-5 6-0 victory over the French world number three.
Former Australian Open runner-up Kim Clijsters eased past Israel's Shahar Peer 6-2 6-1 to join China's Li Na in the semi-finals.
Li defeated Slovenia's Katarina Srebotnik 7-5 6-1.
Mauresmo, who is likely to be seeded number two when she defends her Australian Open title in Melbourne, broke Jankovic's opening service game but struggled thereafter.
Jankovic ended 2006 ranked 12th in the world but is poised to break into the top 10 after winning her first eight matches this year.
The 21-year-old captured her second WTA title in New Zealand last weekend and opened her Sydney campaign with a three-set victory over former world number one Martina Hingis.
