Third seed Ana Ivanovic of Serbia had a 7-6 (7-5) 6-1 win over Roberta Vinci in the Australian Women's Hardcourt Championships first round on Monday. Australia's Nicole Pratt beat Russian Elena Bovina 6-2 6-7 (4-7) 6-1 and will now face top seed Martina Hingis.
Elsewhere on the Gold Coast, Israel's Shahar Peer beat American Meghann Shaughnessy 6-1 5-7 6-0.
Italy's Tathiana Garbin upset fourth seed Anna Lena-Groenefeld of Germany 7-6 (7-4) 6-7 (2-7) 6-3.
Sixth-seeded Li Na of China beat Sandra Zahlavova 6-0 6-4 and ninth-seeded Katarina Srebotnik beat American qualifier Vania King 6-4 6-3.
