Russia's Anastasia Myskina says a toe injury may keep her out of this month's Australian Open. Myskina slumped to a 6-1 6-7 6-2 defeat against Argentina's Gisela Dulko in the first round of the Auckland Classic in her first action since October.
"I realised during the match that I may not be ready for the Australian Open," said the 2004 French Open winner.
"I still feel pain there and it bothers me. Maybe I'm going to have to take a longer break."
The Australian Open gets under way on 15 January in Melbourne.
Myskina, seeded second in Auckland, received treatment during the second set and looked ill at ease on court throughout the match.
Dulko took the first set in 24 minutes but let a match point slip in the second before fighting back in the deciding set to win in one hour and 51 minutes.
Myskina said she will be returning to Moscow for further treatment and will miss next week's Sydney International tournament.
Defending champion Marion Bartoli defeated Japan's 16-year-old Ayumi Morita 7-6 6-3, while France's Camille Pin beat Shenay Perry 6-3 5-7 6-2.
