Baltacha has returned to action after serious back surgery last year |
Former British number one Elena Baltacha could not continue her run at the Eastbourne International as she lost 6-3 6-2 to Nicole Vaidisova. Baltacha, who reached the second round after beating fellow Brit Anne Keothavong, broke Czech fifth seed Vaidisova in their opening game.
But Vaidisova broke back immediately and, despite some wayward ground strokes, won in 62 minutes.
Top seed Justine Henin later saw off Agnieszka Radwanska 6-4 6-1.
Baltacha admitted: "She (Vaidisova) was relentless. In the middle there must have been three or four games where she just kept hitting winners.
"But it was just the sort of experience I need. It has been exciting and this week I've proved to myself how much I've improved but also how much work there is still to do.
"I'm proud to be have been one of the Brits who have done really well and although we've got a lot to look forward to at Wimbledon next week everything there depends on the draw."
French second seed Amelie Mauresmo cruised into the third round with a 6-2 6-3 victory again Italys Mara Santangelo.
