Henman v Tursunov as it happened
Nottingham Open

Second-round result:

T Henman (GB) v D Tursunov (Rus)

6-7 (7-9) 6-3 2-6

GAME-BY-GAME UPDATES:

By Chris Bevan

THIRD SET

Henman 2-6 Tursunov
It's all over in just over two hours. Tursunov piles on the pressure with some strong returns and wraps it up with a backhand winner. Henman trudges off court and the next time we will see him is at Wimbledon.

"I think Tim will be glad he came to Nottingham. He was badly out of practice before this week but he has won a match and just had a two-hour tug-of-war with a genuine contender for Wimbledon so he has got to be happy with that.
BBC Radio Nottingham commentator Colin Fray

"Tursunov has really exploded on to the scene in the last couple of years. He is not just about the big serve, he can play any number of groundstrokes too and is a fascinating player to watch.
BBC Radio Nottingham commentator Dave Jackson

Henman 2-5 Tursunov
Another superb service game by Tursunov, wrapped up by two aces that move him to the brink of victory.

"It might be a cheap shot but Henman has not had to play two games in two days for a long time. Both players are looking a bit tired now."
BBC Radio Nottingham commentator Dave Jackson

Henman 2-4 Tursunov
Tursunov is looking confident now and Henman is having to work hard for everything. He is still fighting though.

Henman 1-4 Tursunov
More dominant serving by Tursunov. Throw in an ace and he holds to love - things are looking ominous for Henman.

"Tim just has to remember how many times he has broken the Russian so far this afternoon. There are plenty of twists and turns to come yet in this match."BBC Radio Nottingham commentator Colin Fray

Henman 1-3 Tursunov
Sloppy stuff from Henman and this time he is punished. A low volley flies out to allow Tursunov to break and Tim smashes a ball out of the stadium in anger.

Henman 1-2 Tursunov
Nothing Henman can do here as a series of powerful Tursanov serves whizz past him. Tim still doesn't look happy though.

Henman 1-1 Tursunov
Straightforward enough for Henman. He has to work hard for the first point but, other than that, it is almost a perfect service game.

"I don't think we will see anywhere near the number of breaks of serve in this final set that we saw earlier. Both players know they are close to going out of the tournament and they will be focusing far more on holding their own serve."
BBC Radio Nottingham commentator Colin Fray

Henman 0-1 Tursunov
Tursunov gets off to a solid start in the deciding set, winning the opening game with a rasping winner off his double backhand.

SECOND SET

Henman 6-3 Tursunov
Another game that sways to and fro. Henman heaps the pressure on himself with two loose shots but he recovers well and wraps up the set at the first time of asking.

"Tursunov rams his racquet into the ground in frustration - he won't get a straight-sets win now. Some positive signs for Tim and a very good comeback after the manner in which he lost the first set."
BBC Radio Nottingham commentator Colin Fray

Henman 5-3 Tursunov
When Tursunov gets hold of his serve there is not a great deal Henman can do about it. The Russian is still looking unhappy but it is not affecting his game too much.

"Henman has won 82% of points on his first serve but only 40% on his second. It just goes to show how clinical Tursunov can be on Henman's second serve."
BBC Radio Nottingham commentator Dave Jackson

Henman 5-2 Tursunov
Some sloppy play from Henman gives Tursunov a glimpse of another break but he finds his focus and some more big serving saves the day.

Henman 4-2 Tursunov
Not a lot has gone right for Tursunov in this set but he is finding the far corners of the court and is clearly not going to give up without a fight.

"At the moment Henman is looking the most comfortable and confident of the two players. Tursunov seems to be a bit moody and is skulking about on court at the moment."
BBC Radio Nottingham commentator Dave Jackson

Henman 4-1 Tursunov
No mucking about here from Henman. Tursunov did nothing wrong but Henman is going for it now and plays some great serve-volley tennis to hold convincingly.

Henman 3-1 Tursunov
A strange game from both players. Henman works hard to win the first point but lazily puts his next return into the bottom of the net. Tursunov is at it too with one brilliantly casual backhand winner before he somehow wastes a volley that was begging to be put away. The end result is another break for Henman and Tursunov throws away his racquet in disgust.

Henman 2-1 Tursunov
Not so good for Tim. He saves two break-points with two deep second serves but fails to wrap the game up and a fifth double-fault gives Tursunov the game.

"You can sense Henman's dilemma when he lines up his second serve. He is thinking whether to go for a carbon-copy of his first serve because anything else is being whacked around the court by Tursunov."
BBC Radio Nottingham commentator Dave Jackson

"This is an absolutely cracking match - both players are going at it hammer and tongs."
BBC Radio Nottingham commentator Colin Fray

Henman 2-0 Tursunov
This is just what the doctor ordered - Henman is solid on the baseline and inspired at the net. A Tursunov forehand flies out and Tim is clenching his fist after a valuable early break.

Henman 1-0 Tursunov
Henman is still serving well despite that setback in the tie-break. He wraps up the first game of the second set with a flashing crosscourt backhand that Tursunov can do nothing with.

FIRST SET

Henman 6-7 (7-9) Tursunov
Oh dear. Henman should really be a set up but instead he is 1-0 down. The tie-break goes with serve until Henman produces a clinical backhand winner when Tursunov slips before another superb passing-shot gives Tim three set-points. But he wastes two on his own serve and Tursunov levels to 6-6 before serving out at 9-7.

"One of Tim's failings down the years has been his inability to finish off opponents after working so hard to create the opportunity. He has worked hard and played well in this first set but he has nothing to show for it."
BBC Radio Nottingham commentator Dave Jackson

Henman 6-6 Tursunov
Another ace by Henman and some more confident volleying means we are going to a tie-break.

"This is such positive play from Henman. Watching him you would not believe he had only won one game all year before coming to Nottingham."
BBC Radio Nottingham commentator Dave Jackson

Henman 5-6 Tursunov

Henman is trying to mix things up by getting to the net whenever possible but he does not get any joy on the Tursunov serve this time.

Henman 5-5 Tursunov
More big serving from Henman and it is still working well. Going for his second serve may be a risky strategy but he knows he has little choice but to continue.

"It is the accuracy and the pace of Henman's serve that is causing Tursunov problems now. He may have had a couple of double-faults but that is five aces he has hit now."
BBC Radio Nottingham commentator Dave Jackson

Henman 4-5 Tursunov
Tursunov is dodgy at the net and is becoming a bit hit-and-miss with his serve too but when he gets it over there is not a lot that Tim can do about it.

Henman 4-4 Tursunov
Henman is still struggling on his second serve but he looks in good shape otherwise. The Russian makes him work for this one but some solid net play - including a lovely dinked volley - helps bring Henman level.

Henman 3-4 Tursunov
A first double-fault by Tursunov gives Henman a way in and a wild forehand helps him gain two break points. He manages to bring the Russian to the net and a cheeky crosscourt backhand winner brings him right back into this set.

Henman 2-4 Tursunov
The good news for Henman is that he has found his first serve at last. The bad news is that Tursunov is equal to it. Tim has to save a break point before a forehand winner ensures he holds serve.

"We may see a few double-faults by Henman now because he knows he needs to serve big otherwise he is going to get picked off by Tursunov."
BBC Radio Nottingham commentator Dave Jackson

Henman 1-4 Tursunov
Another great service game by Tursunov - he is just not giving Henman a sniff at the moment.

Henman 1-3 Tursunov
The sun is suddenly out in Nottingham but it is not shining on Tim. Tursunov is punishing every Henman second-serve and breaks him in convincing style.

Henman 1-2 Tursunov
For someone who is known to avoid straying too far from the baseline, Tursunov seems happy enough in and around the net here. A mishit Henman trickles into the net and the match continues to go with serve.

Henman 1-1 Tursunov
Henman has found his groove with his forehand already but not so with his backhand - he is still running round it if possible. Tursunov shows what he is capable of with one stunning return winner but Henman holds out comfortably enough.

Henman 0-1 Tursunov
Tursunov, wearing a lovely pink number, is in no mood to mess around and takes the first game comfortably.

1343: Play begins and it is Tursunov to serve.

1338: Henman and Tursunov are out on court and warming up. The sky is overcast in Nottingham and there is a bit of a breeze too.

Henman managed his first win in four months when he beat Michael Russell on Tuesday but he faces a tough task if he is to progress here.

His opponent Dmitry Tursunov is bang in form after reaching the semi-finals of last week's Artois Championships and has beaten Henman at Wimbledon, Roland Garros and the Australian Open in the last two years.

Tursunov, the world number 24, is the second seed here in Nottingham and begins this match as the hot favourite.
