Haarhuis only qualified because Richard Krajicek withdrew with injury |
Defending champion Paul Haarhuis secured his quarter-final place in the Masters with a tough three-set win over Germany's Carl-Uwe Steeb. The Dutchman came from a set down to beat Steeb 3-6 6-2 10-2, which means Steeb is out of the 12-man tournament.
Haarhuis said: "I picked it up in the second set and started playing better - my serving got better and that's good."
Sergi Bruguera became the first player through to the last eight with a 6-3 3-6 10-5 victory over Thomas Muster.
But Britain's Jeremy Bates found former world number one Marcelo Rios too hot to handle.
The 30-year-old Chilean - the youngest player in the field - totally
outclassed 44-year-old Bates, cruising through 6-2, 6-1, in 42 minutes on his Royal Albert Hall debut.
But Bates, winner of his opening match against Pat Cash on Tuesday, will still qualify for the quarter-finals unless Cash manages a highly unlikely victory over tournament favourite Rios in the final group game on Thursday.
