Federer has not played in the Davis Cup first round since 2004 |
Roger Federer has ruled out playing in Switzerland's Davis Cup first-round tie against Spain in February. The world number one's decision ends hopes of a possible meeting with his closest rival Rafael Nadal.
"He wants to concentrate on retaining his number one status and on defending his titles at important tournaments," said Swiss spokesman Daniel Monnin.
World number two Nadal is yet to reveal whether he will be in Switzerland when the tie begins on 9 February.
Federer has not played in the first round of the Davis Cup for two seasons, but did return to the side to help his country to avoid relegation from the World Group on both occasions.
