Murray finishes the season as a top 20 player

Nursing a sore throat, 13th seed Murray fought hard against the 17th-ranked Slovak, coming back from 3-0 down to force a tie-break in the opening set.

The Scot squandered a 5-3 lead, saved a set point at 5-6 but looked tired as he netted to hand Hrbaty an 8-6 victory.

Hrbaty took control in the second set, with Murray an increasingly forlorn figure, and won it at a canter to love.

"I wasn't hitting the ball great," Murray said after the defeat. "He was definitely the better player."

But Murray was unhappy after his match was moved because of an injury to Richard Gasquet, who was due to play Marat Safin but was forced to withdraw.

"Obviously you prefer to know what court you're playing on," Murray said. "Two days in a row I got switched."

Hrbaty now plays defending champion Tomas Berdych, who defeated Robby Ginepri 6-3 6-3.

Spain's Tommy Robredo will face Finnish 14th seed Jarkko Nieminen in the last eight.

Robredo booked his place in the Masters Cup in Shanghai after a 6-4 7-6 (7/1) win over Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu.

Nieminen ended the run of Russian lucky loser Teimuraz Gabashvili, who replaced the absent Roger Federer in the main draw, winning 4-6 7-6 (8/6) 6-2.

Tenth seed Tommy Haas beat Masters Cup hopeful James Blake 6-4 6-2, and fourth seed Nikolay Davydenko earlier thrashed fellow Russian Dmitry Tursunov 6-2 6-2.

Mario Ancic kept his Masters Cup hopes alive with an impressive 6-3 6-1 win over Julien Benneteau.
