Fifth seed Jarkko Nieminen moved into the second round of the St Petersburg Open with a 7-5 6-2 win over Serbia's Janko Tisarevic. Finn Nieminen now meets Italian Potito Starace, who saw off his compatriot Daniele Bracciali 6-3 6-3.
The only shock on the opening day was the defeat of eighth seed Juergen Melzer to Czech player Lukas Dlouhy.
The top two seeds, Russian Nikolay Davydenko and Spain's Tommy Robredo, begin their campaigns on Tuesday.
