Britain's Jonathan Marray was beaten 6-4 7-6 (7-3) by Frenchman Marc Gicquel in round one of the Stockholm Open. The Liverpool-born British number 12 made it into the main draw with a three-set victory over Denmark's Kristian Pless on Monday.
Spanish top seed Rafael Nadal eased into the second round, with a 6-4 6-2 win over Dutchman Raemon Sluiter.
In other first-round matches, home hopeful Jonas Bjorkman downed another Dutch player Peter Wessels 7-5 6-2.
Belgian seventh seed Kristof Vliegen cruised past Chile's Nicolas Massu 6-2 6-4.
Spaniard Feliciano Lopez progressed when Argentine Juan Monaco retired after just three games of the first set, trailing 2-1.
