"Play this damn game!" shouts Roddick, rather oddly, after putting a forehand wide to slip to 30-30. Federer then hammers backhand pass to get to match point but Roddick saves it with a service winner. He then squeezes a cross-court backhand winner past Federer and avoids the 'bagel' with a sharp volley.

Awesome. Federer holds to 15, Roddick shakes his head in bemusement and the crowd falls eerily quiet as their man is steamrollered.
Federer 4-0 Roddick
Game over. Federer breaks again for his sixth game in a row and you have to feel sorry for Roddick, who has done very little wrong.

Both players leave the arena for 'bathroom breaks'. Roddick returns in T-shirt number three - this time pristine white. If Federer's confidence had gone away at all, it's certainly back as he shows by dominating one rally with his rejuvenated backhand. A good start to the fourth set for Federer.
Third set:
Federer 7-5 Roddick
A bizarre mishit on the opening point gets Roddick on the back foot and Federer finally makes a backhand pass to get to 0-30. Roddick then pulls a forehand wide, giving Federer three set points. Even Tiger Woods looks nervous in Federer's player's box.
Roddick saves number one with a booming ace but Federer then catches the American flat-footed at the net with a sliced backhand and the champion is two sets to one up.
Federer 6-5 Roddick
Federer plays a beautiful forehand down the line to get to 30-0 and seals the game with a drop shot.
Federer 5-5 Roddick
Federer is no great fan of the replay challenge system but he uses it to successfuly question a return on the second point that is called out, winning the subsequent let. Roddick batters his way to 40-15 and takes his second game point from the net.
Federer 5-4 Roddick
An excellent game from Federer levels things up and we look to be heading for a tie-break.
Federer 4-4 Roddick
Roddick smashes away a forehand on the first point, Federer responds with the deftest of drop shots. Roddick sticks to his game plan of hammering forehands and it works well as he wins to 15.

Federer is back under the cosh at 30-30 but he fires a big first serve and puts away a short forehand on his way to holding.

A dramatic game of seven deuces. Federer puts the pressure on at 30-30 and Roddick nets a volley but the American saves break point with a big serve. A superb cross-court forehand from Federer earns another break point, Roddick saves with another huge serve.
Another Federer forehand earns break point number three, this time the Swiss plays a tame return and Roddick moves in and puts away a smash. After missing countless backhands down the line Federer makes a beauty to get a fourth break point but then chips the return long off a second serve.
Break point number five arrives when Roddick blasts a forehand wide but again Federer plays a weak return and then misses the backhand down the line. Roddick eventually holds and 23,000 New Yorkers get to their feet to salute a fantastic game.
Federer 3-2 Roddick
Roddick is 'in the zone' at the moment. He dictates the rallies and gets to triple break point at 0-40. Federer saves the first with an ace and the second with two smashes, prompting a smile from the increasingly relaxed Roddick. Federer moves to the net to save the third before a bullet return from Roddick brings break point number four.
The American works an opening but snatches at a forehand down the line and sticks it in the net. Federer makes him pay for what could be a crucial hold.
Federer 2-2 Roddick
The pressure builds on Roddick at 30-30 but he plays a short, angled approach that forces Federer to net a backhand and follows up with an ace. Good stuff from the American.

Federer rolls through another smooth service game to love and at the moment he's playing at about 70%, while Roddick is nearer 90%. Maybe 95%.
Federer 1-1 Roddick
Federer has been unusually quiet but his first bit of magic for a while is a cross-court backhand winner. However, Roddick is still serving well and winning a couple of cheap points in every game. At deuce, the American smacks down an ace and then fashions a Federer-like forehand pass. That one gets Connors up on his feet in the players' box.

Roddick comes out wearing a fresh T-shirt - black rather than grey. Federer, still in blue, kicks off the third set with a straightforward hold.
Second set:
Federer 4-6 Roddick
The excitement in the stadium builds as Roddick comes out to try and level the match and he wallops down a huge ace on the first point. He quickly gets to 40-0 but overcooks a forehand down the line on his first set point. Federer then makes an uncharacteristic forehand error and Roddick lets out a scream of delight. Game on? Definitely.
Federer 4-5 Roddick
Now Federer decides to serve and volley - everybody's at it. It's like Becker v Edberg. Federer takes the first point with a fine half-volley and holds in rapid fashion.
Federer 3-5 Roddick
Federer might be getting just a touch concerned now as there is no sign of him breaking Roddick with the set slipping away. That is despite the Swiss winning one magnificent rally after fending off a Roddick smash.
Federer 3-4 Roddick
Roddick gets the crowd fired up by winning one quick-fire exchange when Federer comes to the net, and he earns a break point when the world number one puts a forehand long. Federer saves it from the net despite the best efforts of Roddick racing around deep behind the baseline. Tiger Woods, and his delightful wife Elin, applaud their man.

Roddick is hanging on to his serve more easily and has cut out the unforced errors.

Roddick looks to have well and truly grabbed the momentum when he takes the opening point but Federer steps up his game with a winning volley, an ace and two great forehands.

Roddick breaks new ground by challenging one of his own serves that is called in - he believes it is out and so does not play Federer's return. The challenge does not bear him out and Roddick looks understandably embarrassed. He recovers quickly though, taking the best game of the match thanks largely to a reaction volley that gets the crowd on their feet.

Federer still looks as smooth and in control as ever, despite the earlier abberation that has left him a break down. He hold serve to 15.

Roddick is spending a lot of time at the net, with varying degrees of success. Two tentative volleys allow Federer to hit winners but the Swiss misses with a third opportunity and Roddick grabs a vital hold.
Federer 0-1 Roddick
Roddick is out of his chair quickly but Federer calmly makes him wait. It does not stop the American making a superb start to the second set, getting to 0-40 by challenging a call and then breaking to love with a cross-court forehand. Game on? Possibly.
First set:
Federer 6-2 Roddick
Credit to Roddick, he is trying to be positive, but his old frailties have not disappeared. He serve-volleys on the first point but dumps an easy volley into the net. Back to basics and an ace and a huge forehand help him to deuce, but a dipping Federer backhand brings the Swiss a first break point. The American then buries a forehand in the net and the first set is gone in 29 minutes.
Federer 5-2 Roddick
Federer opens with a dreadful volley that is greeted with plenty of cheers, and when Roddick forces a volleying error to get to break point it's treated like a match point. Federer sends a backhand off the frame and away into the New York evening and a jubilant Roddick sprints back to his chair - just one more break and he's level. Easy.
Federer 5-1 Roddick
At last Roddick finds his range on serve, bludgeoning three winners that send Federer hurtling outside the tram lines in vain. A wild Federer mishit sees Roddick finally get off the mark, prompting wild celebration from the crowd.

Andy Roddick has enjoyed seeing new coach Jimmy Connors in his players' box all week but Federer looks to have trumped him in the final. Sitting next to the champion's girlfriend, Mirka, is Tiger Woods, dressed in white and sporting a baseball cap turned backwards - a la Bart Simpson when skateboarding.
It's not as if Federer needs much help. From 30-30 he drags Roddick into the net and whips a cross-court forehand past the American. On break point he forces a volleying error from Roddick and things are running away from the home favourite.

Federer has looked vulnerable immediately after breaking serve a few times in this tournament and he faces a break point again. No problem - an ace and two brilliant forehands see off the danger.
