GAME-BY-GAME UPDATES
Fourth set
Murray 0-6 Davydenko
There it is - after a brief stay of execution at deuce, Murray crumbles in the face of Davydenko's relentless power. He's failed to win a single game today and has lost in four sets. He doesn't hang around, either - grabbing his racquet bag, hoisting it onto his shoulders and waving to the crowd as he trudges off court. Still, it's not all doom and gloom - he'll be back for more in future years....
Murray 0-5 Davydenko
And now, the end is near - it's time to face the final curtain. Three more unforced errors from Murray see him broken again, and Davydenko will come out to serve for the match.
Murray 0-4 Davydenko
Davydenko misses two backhands to set up a break point for Murray, only to dominate a 24-shot rally to take it to deuce. Murray hits a cross-court forehand screamer to go to advantage, but Davydenko comes out on top again after another epic baseline slug-fest. With Murray gasping for breath, the Russian cleans up the crumbs to take a big, big lead. You just sense that that could have been Murray's last chance going up in smoke...
Murray 0-3 Davydenko
It's just not happening for Murray at the moment. Well, it is, but only if you call a barrage of double-faults 'happening'. Two more gift Davydenko the game, and the Russian is in complete control. Murray slinks over to his chair and throws his racquet at his bag. It hits it, making it his most accurate effort of the day so far.
Murray 0-2 Davydenko
A big moment as Davydenko goes 15-40 down, only to challenge the line call that cost him the last point. Hawkeye comes riding to his rescue and shows that the ball would have just nibbled the line. Suddenly it's 30-all, and two crisp forehands later, Murray's two games down. In the stands, Brad Gilbert sits impassively in dark glasses.
Murray 0-1 Davydenko
The Russian, dressed all in black, cashes in on two Murray double-faults to go to break point. Murray saves it but then double-faults again and then nets a backhand. He's a game down already, and right up against it.
1603 BST: Not the biggest of crowds in yet. Murray is wearing one black sock and one white sock, plus a bright blue shirt and cap and baggy white shorts. He's a teenager, in case you'd forgotten.
1555 BST: The players are just about the take the court at the Louis Armstrong Stadium. It'll be Murray to serve first, and he needs a better start than yesterday. Any more of that serving horror and he'll be looking down the wrong end of a severe Gilberting from his new coach.
1530 BST: The sun is shining in NYC, and the forecast looking extremely optimistic. The way it's looking, there'll be no more rain delays - it's win or bust for Mr Murray...
TUESDAY'S ACTION
Fourth set
Murray 0-0 Davydenko
It's started raining so there's a delay to the players resuming. This could help Murray out by giving him some time to regroup and get a bit of advice from his coach. The Scot's face is as black as the New York skyline and Brad Gilbert will be worth his substantial salary if he can talk Murray round to victory in this one.
The umpire sends the players back to the locker-room. It's raining softly but steadily - and the forecast isn't good for the rest of the day.
Third set
Murray 3-6 Davydenko
With just over two hours gone, Davydenko serves his way to three set points. A double fault prevents him from taking the set - but only until the next point when Murray is unable to chase down a cross-court winner from the Russian. As he did against Fernando Gonzalez in the last round, Murray must come from two sets to one down.
Murray 3-5 Davydenko
Murray goes 0-30 down but has his serve to thank as he wins the next four points to force the Russian to serve out for the set.
Murray 2-5 Davydenko
The crowd seem to prefer the more openly emotional Murray to the more stoical Russian and are urging him to pick up his concentration and break back. No chance in this game, however, which Davydenko cruises through.
Murray 2-4 Davydenko
Davydenko has suddenly rediscovered his range and is being a lot more aggressive. The Russian earns a break point and converts it with his forehand to win his fourth game on the trot.
Murray 2-3 Davydenko
Murray again has a chance to break but once again the Russian hangs onto his serve. Not sure if the ATP have a ranking list of successful challenges but if they do, Murray must be near the top. He feels a Davydenko serve should have been called out and the replay proves him right.
Murray 2-2 Davydenko
Murray lets Davydenko off the hook as the Russian breaks back, securing the game with a brilliantly angled forehand. Murray is furious with himself - throughout the match he has been giving a running commentary on his game. At this rate, he won't need to bother with a post-match news conference.
Murray 2-1 Davydenko
Somehow Davydenko hangs onto his serve. He looks like he doesn't really know what to do to turn things around and has to save two break points but finally pulls through after a rash of deuces.
Murray 2-0 Davydenko
Things are going firmly in Murray's favour now. He enjoys a comfortable hold of serve as Davydenko appears to have gone off the boil.
Murray 1-0 Davydenko
Murray goes for a bathroom break after the end of the second set but his momentum shows no sign of being interrupted as he breaks the Russian straight away in the third. It's a tense game, the Russian making several unforced errors, including a double fault to go break point down.
Second set
Murray 7-5 Davydenko
Murray seems to have learnt from the previous game, not letting Davydenko into the game at all as he marches to 40-0 up. He unsuccessfully challenges the electronic replay system when he feels a serve is good. But it's all irrelevant when he secures the second set.
Murray 6-5 Davydenko
Now it's Davydenko's turn to net an overhead although it did come off a brilliant Murray lob. The 19-year-old Scot shows some excellent defence in the game to go 0-40 up and when Davydenko splays a forehand wide, Murray finds himself poised to serve for the second set again.
Murray 5-5 Davydenko
The crowd are quite slow to get to their seats after the change of ends and Murray is forced to wait to serve with the new balls. The nervous wait might explain the awful overhead he dumps into the bottom of the net as he again goes 0-30 down on his serve. But Davydenko goes 15-40 up after a fantastic rally full of unbelievable angles. And the Russian needs just one break point, pumping a backhand winner wide of Murray to level the second set.
Murray 5-4 Davydenko
A few slipshod shots from Murray allow Davydenko to race through his service game.
Murray 5-3 Davydenko
Murray launches into a teenage-like rant when he goes 0-30 down. But it does the trick as he wins the next four points, the last of which is an ace. He's just one game away from taking the second set.
Murray 4-3 Davydenko
Davydenko's first ace of the match clinches the game for the Russian, whose level of play has definitely dropped but who is doggedly hanging onto Murray's coat-tails in this second set.
Murray 4-2 Davydenko
Murray has to battle hard to hold his serve. The teenager faces a break point but saves it and finally closes out the game as the match passes the one-hour mark. Murray also wins his first challenge of a line decision, bringing a cheer from around the stadium, which is gradually beginning to fill up.
Murray 3-2 Davydenko
Murray has the chance to really turn the screw in this set when he goes 15-30 up. But Davydenko fights back to hold.
Murray 3-1 Davydenko
Murray has the initiative now. He is bounding around the court like a labrador puppy and some excellent first serving helps him hold convincingly.
Murray 2-1 Davydenko
A cry of "Yeah!" from Murray as he manages to break the Russian. Davydenko's level has dropped - where he was clipping the lines with metronomic regularity, he is now going inches long. Murray takes full advantage and the momentum of the match swings in the Scot's favour.
Murray 1-1 Davydenko
There's a huge roar from the spectators as Murray finally holds after being broken three times in a row.
Murray 0-1 Davydenko
The folically-challenged Russian carries on where he left off in the opening set, winning his seventh straight game. Murray shares a frank - and slightly harsh - description of the way he is playing with the world. He does get Davydenko to deuce but the seventh seed is not missing anything at the moment and comes through to hold.
First set
Murray 1-6 Davydenko
Murray's nightmare continues, serving his first double fault of the match as he goes 0-40 down. He manages to save two of the set points but Davydenko converts the third to clinch the first set after just 28 minutes.
Murray 1-5 Davydenko
Murray is furiously muttering to himself already but gets a chance to break when Davydenko double-faults for the first time in the match to go 30-40 down. But the Russian saves the break point in no-nonsense fashion and extends his run to five games in a row.
Murray 1-4 Davydenko
Murray berates himself as a first serve finds the net and then a backhand error has him looking very anguished and puts him 15-40 down. Davydenko is looking very focused and breaks again.
Murray 1-3 Davydenko
Murray throws up a crafty lob that outwits Davydenko but the Russian is controlling the points and playing brilliantly.
Murray 1-2 Davydenko
Davydenko forces two break points and takes an early advantage as Murray sends an appalling backhand floating well over the baseline. Davydenko is favourite to win this match and Murray will need to show more fight if he is to have a chance against the seventh-seeded Russian.
Murray 1-1 Davydenko
Both players are right on their game and the second point is a beauty, with Davydenko finally forcing Murray to net an attempted running backhand down the line.
Murray 1-0 Davydenko
Murray wins the first point with an exquisite backhand volley and it sets the tone as he holds to love. The young Scot has met Davydenko once before, with the Russian coming out on top.
1606: The players have knocked up and are ready to get under way in front of a sparse but enthusiastic crowd on the Louis Armstrong Court.

The Scot is bidding to reach a Grand Slam quarter-final for the first time in his career.
