GAME-BY-GAME UPDATES
THIRD SET
Di Mauro 1-6 Murray
Di Mauro shows some 'dog', as the Aussies might say, and takes the game to deuce with some nice touches. But Murray leaves his opponent flat-footed with a fine forehand return and wraps things up with a stinging forehand down the line. You have to say that was magnificent.
Di Mauro 1-5 Murray
Another love service game from Murray. Just too easy.
Di Mauro 1-4 Murray
Di Mauro unfurls a rare pass, whipping a backhand past an onrushing Murray. Murray then pounces on a net cord, dinking the ball over the stranded Di Mauro with no little arrogance. He secures the break with a savage cross-court backhand.
Di Mauro 1-3 Murray
Murray looks like he's a bit bored and produces some unforced errors. However, on break point, Di Mauro almost falls over. You have to have sympathy for him. Murray drills a forehand home and goes on to take the game.
Di Mauro 1-2 Murray
A roar of "concentrate!" from Murray as Di Mauro puts away a forehand winner. Don't be too tough on yourself, Andy, you're ruining him. But give Di Mauro some credit, he gutses it out and takes his second game of the match.
Di Mauro 0-2 Murray
Nice touch from Di Mauro, just guiding Murray's serve down the line. But Murray stays with him and clinches the game with another ace.
Di Mauro 0-1 Murray
Time for Di Mauro to swing into life? Regrettably, no. He's really shrivelling away now and loses the game to 15, Murray sealing it with another crafty slide-rule backhand pass.
SECOND SET
Di Mauro 1-6 Murray
Di Mauro shows signs of life with a whipping backhand pass to set up his first break point, but Murray holds. Murray then crushes a trademark backhand down the line, almost like a Kevin Pietersen square-cut, and cements the set with another forehand winner. Dreamy stuff from the 17th seed.
Di Mauro 1-5 Murray
Di Mauro is being schooled in the fine arts of court management by Murray. The Scot is dragging Di Mauro all over the court and breaks yet again. The Italian will have one foot in the locker room.
Di Mauro 1-4 Murray
The crowd look a little bemused at this one-sided fare. Grandstand court must be the quietest place in New York at the moment, if not North America. Murray strolls through another easy service game.
Di Mauro 1-3 Murray
Signs that Di Mauro is shrinking as he plops a tame backhand into the base of the net. Murray, as is his want, has a little beef with a line-judge, but Di Mauro then frames another shot long to make it 15-40 and gifts the game to Murray with a wild smash. This is bread and butter for Murray, and a horror show from his Italian opponent.
Di Mauro 1-2 Murray
Murray may have lost his first game of the match, but he brushes it off like a small bump in the road and wins his service game to love in little over a minute.
Di Mauro 1-1 Murray
It's pretty gloomy out in New York, long-sleeve weather. Di Mauro manages to outlast Murray for once, but loses the next two rallies. The Italian's passive, clay-court game is bending under Murray's more aggressive hard-court approach. Di Mauro, however, sends down his first ace and manages to win his first game.
Di Mauro 0-1 Murray
Di Mauro shows a spark of form with a winning forehand but Murray hits back with the first ace of the match and easily holds.
FIRST SET
Di Mauro 0-6 Murray
Murray is in tip-top form, and slams yet another forehand winner past a stationary Di Mauro, to 'oohs' from the New York faithful. Di Mauro fails to take advantage of a poor Murray drop-shot and is lobbed and Murray goes on to seal a 'donut' set. No contest thus far.
Di Mauro 0-5 Murray
Another fizzing, top-spin winner from Murray and he looks in another class to the Italian. Murray serves up his first double-fault, but Di Mauro is putting up little resistence and gives up another game with a tame forehand into the base of the net.
Di Mauro 0-4 Murray
Murray is wowing the crowd with his angled backhands. After one of them, Murray bounds to the net like an excited labrador and puts away a top-spin forehand. Another game to love and Di Mauro is getting mauled.
Di Mauro 0-3 Murray
Murray looks in fine fettle and finishes off the game with another crushing forehand which leaves Di Mauro floundering. Fourteen points to four so far in Murray's favour.
Di Mauro 0-2 Murray
Murray finishes off a lengthy rally with a hammer forehand which leaves Di Mauro rooted to the spot and then moves to advantage courtesy of a friendly net cord. Murray breaks with a whippy back-hand pass.
Di Mauro 0-1 Murray
Murray has first serve, and opens up a 30-0 lead with one of his trademark drop-shots. Murray wins the game to love - a confident start by the Scot.
1900 BST: Players are out on Grandstand court. Di Mauro, like Murray, is a counter-attacker. Unlike Murray, he's a leftie.
British number one Murray, making his second appearance at Flushing Meadows, defeated Robert Kendrick 6-2 1-6 6-3 6-3 in the first round on Thursday.
He is expected to beat Di Mauro, despite losing to the Italian 6-2 6-1 in a Challenger event last year.
