GAME-BY-GAME UPDATES
Third set:
Federer 7-5 Henman
As the two-hour mark passes, Federer breezes to 40-0 up and needs just one match point to clinch a place in the third round.
Federer 6-5 Henman
A couple of brilliant backhand passes from Federer turn the screw on Henman. Henman whips a forehand half-volley wide and finds himself 15-40 down. A backhand wide from the Briton and Federer will now be serving for the match.
Federer 5-5 Henman
Henman has a momentary reason for hope when Federer drops the opening point of his serve but the Swiss motors through the next four points to shut the door on Henman's hopes of breaking.
Federer 4-5 Henman
Henman again stubbornly holds serve, coming back from 15-30 down.
Federer 4-4 Henman
Of course Federer doesn't have off points... He doesn't drop a point as he races through his service game.
Federer 3-4 Henman
Federer is showing the first signs of irritation, giving an anguished cry when making an error that lets his opponent off the hook. Henman comes through unscathed - he just needs Federer to have a few off points on his serve and the unseeded player could nick this set.
Federer 3-3 Henman
Federer blasts through his service game.
Federer 2-3 Henman
Henman edges ahead again in the set. This is his best spell of the match but you get the feeling that Federer will just step up a level when he needs to.
Federer 2-2 Henman
Federer comes up with an amazing shot, even by his standards. He plays the ball from behind his legs - a surprised Henman manages to volley it back but Federer just whips it down the line for a winner.
Federer 1-2 Henman
Federer's break-point tally is already in double figures. Henman has to save two in this game. His fans must hope the normally laid-back Federer will begin to get frustrated that he can't finish the Briton off.
Federer 1-1 Henman
Federer swiftly levels in the third set.
Federer 0-1 Henman
Another tough examination for the Henman serve but the 31-year-old comes through it. The crowd has filled out a bit now and a couple of exciting points gives them a reason to get more involved in the match.
Second set:
Federer 6-4 Henman
Thjere is a bit more conviction about Henman now and when Federer makes a couple of errors to go 15-30 down, there is a glimmer of hope for British fans. But it disappears as suddenly as it arrived, Federer blasting down his third ace as he secures the set on his third set point.
Federer 5-4 Henman
Henman is hanging in, saving a set point on his way to holding serve. The Briton uses a challenge when one of his serves is called out - even he is forced to smile when the replay shows the ball was about three feet out. Maybe he'll be getting some glasses for his 32nd birthday next week...
Federer 5-3 Henman
Federer suffers an unexpected blip, double-faulting to go 15-40 down. Henman takes full advantage, charging in on his opponent's second serve and banging a winning volley across the court.
Federer 5-2 Henman
Henman's serve has creaked in the last couple of service games and it finally caves in. The 15-40 score follows again and when Henman double-faults, Federer pockets another break.
Federer 4-2 Henman
Top seed Federer zaps down an ace and again coasts on his serve. It's another master-class from the Swiss maestro - the spectators' lack of enthusiasm suggests they see it more as double maths rather than cookery.
Federer 3-2 Henman
After dropping his last serve, Henman hangs on this time, mainly because of a couple of rare errors from the Federer racquet.
Federer 3-1 Henman
Federer races through another service game. The Swiss player is in complete charge of this match.
Federer 2-1 Henman
We're back to the 15-40 scenario on Henman's serve. The Briton saves the first break point but Federer is just too good.
Federer 1-1 Henman
Henman is now at least trying different tactics to make some inroads into his opponent's serve. But Federer is deceptively good - he just hits the next shot a bit harder or with a slightly more acute angle, all the while looking as if this whole tennis lark is pretty effortless stuff.
Federer 0-1 Henman
Henman begins the second set with an ace and enjoys his first love service game. The trademark scowl has lifted slightly.
First set:
Federer 6-3 Henman
Federer races to 40-0 and has the first set in the bag after 39 minutes when Henman floats a backhand wide.
Federer 5-3 Henman
Henman struggles again to hold serve but comes through to at least force Federer to serve for the set.
Federer 5-2 Henman
Another straightforward hold for Federer, who is wearing a bright blue shirt with matching bandana - it's a similar colour to the court - could be a handy Sir Alex Ferguson-style excuse for the post-match news conference for Henman...
Federer 4-2 Henman
After wading through his previous service games like treacle, Henman manages to hold much more comfortably. He still gets hauled back from 40-0 to 40-30 but at least there are no break points.
Federer 4-1 Henman
Another quickfire service hold from the world number one Federer. Henman is not happy when umpire Sandra de Jenken overrules on a Federer serve and lets her know it. But tellingly, he doesn't use one of his electronic replay challenges.
Federer 3-1 Henman
For his second service game in a row, Henman finds himself 15-40 down. But the British number two battles back and after squandering a succession of game points, he finally manages to hold.
Federer 3-0 Henman
A smattering of applause from the sparse crowd greets Federer as he holds serve. It's a real contrast in atmosphere to the last time they met at Flushing Meadows, which was in the 2004 semi-finals.
Federer 2-0 Henman
A disastrous start for Henman, who serves three double-faults in his opening service game. The Briton looks stiff and awkward, managing to save three break points before finally succumbing.
Federer 1-0 Henman
Henman chips and charges on the first point but goes long. Federer eases himself into the match, not dropping a point in his opening service game.
1615 BST: It's a breezy morning in New York City as Federer and Henman knock up. Federer wins the toss and chooses to serve. After last night's dramatics with Andre Agassi in front of a capacity 23,000 crowd, the Arthur Ashe Stadium has an eerily empty feel to it.
Build-up:
British number two Tim Henman faces Roger Federer in the second round for the second Grand Slam event in a row.
Henman won just six games when the pair last met at Wimbledon and although he still holds a 6-5 winning record over the world number one he has not taken a set off Federer in their last four meetings.
Reigning champion Federer, meanwhile, is looking for his third straight title at Flushing Meadows.
