Gamewatch: Henman v Rusedski
US Open, Flushing Meadows

First-round result:

T Henman (GB) v G Rusedski (GB)

7-6 (7/4) 6-2 6-3

GAME-BY-GAME UPDATES

Third set:

Henman 6-3 Rusedski
There's an air of inevitability as Henman races to 40-0 and three match points. Rusedski saves the first but when Rusedski floats a backhand long, it's all over and Henman's good record against his fellow Briton is continued.

Henman 5-3 Rusedski
A couple of sloppy shots from Rusedski and he's facing a break point. He goes long and Henman will be serving for a place in the second round. Rusedski has lost in the first round on his last three visits to Flushing Meadows - and he's about to do it again.

Henman 4-3 Rusedski
Both players are urging themselves on now. Rusedski feels he has had the worst of the line-calls today and he gives the service line a hard stare as Henman again edges ahead in the match.

Henman 3-3 Rusedski
Rusedski goes 0-30 down but shows some grit in winning the next four points, securing the game with a forehand winner down the line.

Henman 3-2 Rusedski
Henman is showing no signs yet of wavering, once again edging ahead in the set.

Henman 2-2 Rusedski
Rusedski is still clinging on, holding serve again.

Henman 2-1 Rusedski
Another straightforward hold from Henman. He's looking much the perkier of the two players at the moment.

Henman 1-1 Rusedski
After losing four games in a row, Rusedski stops the rot by holding serve - but it's a long way back from here.

Henman 1-0 Rusedski
Rusedski has changed his shirt but it doesn't change his fortunes - Henman does not drop a point as he breezes through the opening game of the set.

Second set:

Henman 6-2 Rusedski
Things get worse for Rusedski as he goes 0-40 down. He is beginning to look laboured and as if his troublesome hip is bothering him. It's no surprise when Henman comes up with a running forehand to clinch the set. Henman scampers happily to his chair; Rusedski slumps forlornly into his.

Henman 5-2 Rusedski
Henman is again relatively untroubled as he moves within a game of the second set. Rusedski fans must hope for a trademark Henman wobble now.

Henman 4-2 Rusedski
That's more like it from Rusedski as he races through his service game without dropping a point.

Henman 4-1 Rusedski
Henman looks in control now as he edges towards a two-set lead. There's a subdued atmosphere on Court 11 for a match that would be a Centre Court certainty at Wimbledon. From the sounds of it, however, there's plenty going on off-court with a tannoy blaring, aeroplanes droning overhead and some whooping and hollering coming from a nearby court.

Henman 3-1 Rusedski
Rusedski dices with disaster, going break point down again. But he manages to hang on and hold.

Henman 3-0 Rusedski
In a reverse of the first set, Henman goes 3-0 up. He managed to fight back in the opener but Rusedski's weary trudge back to his chair at the changeover suggests that the 1997 US Open finalist won't be able to do the same.

Henman 2-0 Rusedski
The worst possible start to the second set for Rusedski - he gets broken by Henman.

Henman 1-0 Rusedski
No doubt buoyed by winning the opening set, Henman looks well into the groove now and races through his first service game of the second set without dropping a point.

First set:

Henman 7-6 (7-4) Rusedski
Henman takes the first set. The turning point of the tiebreak comes at 4-4 when Rusedski slaps a routine forehand into the net. He doesn't win another point as Henman claims the set at his first opportunity.

Henman 6-6 Rusedski
Despite serving his first double fault of the match, Henman holds serve to force the tiebreak.

Henman 5-6 Rusedski
Rusedski is a bit narked when the umpire overrules on a serve that the left-hander thought was good. That puts him in danger at 15-30 down but he then wins the next three points to hold.

Henman 5-5 Rusedski
The first set looks like it's heading for a tiebreak as Henman holds.

Henman 4-5 Rusedski
Rusedski eases through his service game. Henman produces a brilliant down-the-line forehand winner but on the next point, he mistimes a shot and the ball hurtles out of the court in the direction of Boston. And that sums up how patchily the Oxfordshire-born Briton is playing at the moment.

Henman 4-4 Rusedski
Henman holds serve but he seems a bit out of sorts - there's lots of muttering and frowning going on at his end of the court.

Henman 3-4 Rusedski
Rusedski gets his serving arm back in gear, his first ace since the opening game enabling him to hold and end Henman's run of three games on the trot.

Henman 3-3 Rusedski
Rusedski, who is already towelling himself down on every point in frenzied fashion, hits a couple of pounding winners but then whacks a couple of shots wide as Henman holds serve to level the match.

Henman 2-3 Rusedski
The best game of the match so far with some long, probing rallies. Henman gets a chance to break back and does when Rusedski dumps a backhand approach shot into the net.

Henman 1-3 Rusedski
Henman has a whinge at the umpire after getting what he thinks is a bad call. But he pulls himself together and clinches the game with his first ace of the match.

Henman 0-3 Rusedski
Rusedski races through his service game. Henman has red, white and blue on his kit but it is Rusedski who is proving to be the best of British at the moment.

Henman 0-2 Rusedski
First blood to Rusedski. Henman pays the price for not getting enough first serves in and finds himself 30-40 down. Rusedski then blasts a forehand return that whistles past Henman almost before he has finished serving.

Henman 0-1 Rusedski
A good start for Rusedski, who not surprisingly chooses to serve after winning the toss. He begins with an ace - and adds another during the game, which he wins, dropping just one point.

2120 BST: It's a cloudy but dry day so far in New York as Henman and Rusedski knock up on Court 11 at Flushing Meadows.

Build-up:

The two stalwarts of British tennis over the last decade face each other for the 12th and possibly last time.

Tim Henman has beaten his great rival Greg Rusedski the last six times they have met and will be the overwhelming favourite to prevail again, given Rusedski's dodgy hip and recent poor run of form.

But the 32-year-old Rusedski, who has now dropped out of the world's top 100, has happy memories of Flushing Meadows, having reached the final nine years ago.

Henman, who has himself been struggling with a back condition, is playing a British opponent for the third match in a row, having suffered consecutive defeats to new national number one Andy Murray.

The prize at stake for the winner is a likely second-round match with Roger Federer - that would be more deja-vu for Henman, who lost to the world number one at the same stage at Wimbledon.
