Davis Cup result:

A MURRAY GB v A RAM Isr

2-6 4-6 7-5 6-2 6-3

By Caroline Cheese

Fifth set

Murray 2-6 4-6 7-5 6-2 6-3 Ram
He's done it. Murray's girlfriend flaps her Union Jack flag with delight as Murray high-fives his British team-mates.

Murray 2-6 4-6 7-5 6-2 5-3 Ram
Great stuff from Ram, who even gives it the "Come on" as he holds to love. It doesn't look good for the Israeli though.

Murray 2-6 4-6 7-5 6-2 5-2 Ram
Ram is hardly moving his feet now and it's just possible that Murray might have turned this tie in Britain's favour simply by keeping the Israeli out here for five sets instead of three. The doubles match is a must-win for Israel and Ram will surely be feeling the effects of this. Murray is a game away from winning his first match from two sets down. He's still grumbling about the photographer, mind.

Murray 2-6 4-6 7-5 6-2 4-2 Ram
Murray, a teenager through and through, shouts at a cameraman for putting him off as Ram keeps in touch.

Murray 2-6 4-6 7-5 6-2 4-1 Ram
Another roar from Murray as he holds to love. Ram gets some more treatment at the changeover, prompting Bates to bug the umpire again about the rules. The man in the chair has certainly earned his money today.

Murray 2-6 4-6 7-5 6-2 3-1 Ram
Murray's squeeze Kim Sears looks a happy woman. Earlier, she took her eyes off the action to enjoy a 99 (with flake) but she's transfixed now. Her man won't finish off with a bagel here though as Ram stops the rot.

Murray 2-6 4-6 7-5 6-2 3-0 Ram
We're under way again and that last bit of shenanigans has only served to fire up Murray even more. He holds to love.

Ram calls the trainer. This is very bad news for Israel, who will be counting on the doubles world number 12 on Saturday. GB skipper Jeremy Bates is pestering the umpire, wondering what the rule is on injury time-outs when it's not a changeover. That's a bit uncharitable, given the state of the match. Now Murray's asking for the trainer, but it doesn't look like he'll get his wish. "You think this is legitimate?" Bates asks an official, pointing at Ram. "It's a joke." Feisty stuff from Jezza.

Murray 2-6 4-6 7-5 6-2 2-0 Ram
Ram is still smiling, but then this is a man who was never expected to take a set in this match, let alone win it. Murray wipes the smile off his face with a brilliant get from a Ram volley. That gives him break point and a delicious forehand puts Murray in complete control.

Murray 2-6 4-6 7-5 6-2 1-0 Ram
Murray questions a line call - but with nowhere near the same desperation he did in the first couple of sets. He accepts the umpire's explanation and walks back to the baseline before holding with ease.

Fourth set

"Murray has got to learn that he can't afford dips like he had earlier in this match. It's OK to do it against a player like Andy Ram, who's not used to playing singles, but against top players, like Marcos Baghdatis at Wimbledon, you can't do it. He will learn that, though."
BBC analyst John Lloyd

Murray 2-6 4-6 7-5 6-2 Ram
Remember the guy who destroyed Andy Roddick at Wimbledon? Well, he's finally arrived in Eastbourne. Murray crunches a backhand past a helpless Ram to earn two set points and a stunning return earns him the set. There's only one winner now. Isn't there?

Murray 2-6 4-6 7-5 5-2 Ram
A couple of ill-advised shots from Murray there, probably the result of complacency from the teenager who is finding things a little too easy now. The horrors of the first and second sets seem a long time ago now.

Murray 2-6 4-6 7-5 4-2 Ram
Murray's confidence is such that he feels able to attempt an audacious backhand overhead. Of course, that is Henman's favourite trick and Murray could do with a few lessons from the veteran Brit because his effort lands well wide.

Murray 2-6 4-6 7-5 4-1 Ram
BBC commentator David Mercer is already talking in terms of a Murray win. Surely he's seen too many Tim Henman matches to speak of victory before it's in the bag.

Murray 2-6 4-6 7-5 3-1 Ram
Bates, a veteran of these Europe/Africa Zone Group One Round One Play-Off encounters, is really enjoying himself now. Murray has the break and, dare we say it, a fifth set beckons.

Murray 2-6 4-6 7-5 2-1 Ram
It's a different match now, the crowd feeding off an upbeat Murray. Bates, who hasn't had the best of days, is looking a little more relaxed too.

Murray 2-6 4-6 7-5 1-1 Ram
Ram is making a tortuous groaning sound as he hits the ball. Has fatigue started to hit already? It wouldn't be surprising in Eastbourne's sweltering temperatures. He holds, but things looks much, much brighter for Murray now.

Murray 2-6 4-6 7-5 1-0 Ram
It's almost like Murray agreed to give Ram a head start. The Brit continues where he left off in the last set.

Third set

"It's a funny old game. I think Andy Murray will take control of this match now."
BBC analyst John Lloyd

Murray 2-6 4-6 7-5 Ram
Finally. Murray earns his first break points of the match - and they're set points. A backhand pass seals it - and suddenly Murray is like a man possessed, pumping his chest. The Eastbourne crowd are even briefly on their feet.

Murray 2-6 4-6 6-5 Ram
Murray holds to 15. "Great play," shouts an increasingly desperate Bates. Defeat in this tie would be another Ecuador, a loss which Roger Taylor probably still has nightmares about.

Murray 2-6 4-6 5-5 Ram
Ram seems to surprise himself with a stunning angled drop volley. He looks over to his support camp to make sure they saw.

Murray 2-6 4-6 5-4 Ram
At least Murray has avoided the pitfall of the second set when he lost serve at 4-4. Now the pressure is on Ram - well a little bit anyway.

Murray 2-6 4-6 4-4 Ram
Murray looks briefly quite excited as he gets to 15-30 but Ram proves his mettle.

Murray 2-6 4-6 4-3 Ram
A solid service game from Murray and we haven't had much opportunity to say that today. Bates needs to work some magic during this changeover.

"If Murray keeps Ram out on court, his legs will go. Ram just isn't used to playing five sets of singles."
BBC analyst John Lloyd

Murray 2-6 4-6 3-3 Ram
Murray flicks a sizzling forehand crosscourt to get to 30-30. It's the shot of the day from the Scot - but then that's not hard. It's still not enough to get him to break point for the first time in the match.

Murray 2-6 4-6 3-2 Ram
A hold from Murray is enough to spark the crowd into life but the body language from their man is hardly inspirational.

Murray 2-6 4-6 2-2 Ram
Jeremy Bates is not a happy former British number one. He has a short exchange with the umpire about something inconsequential, ending with the brutal pay-off: "You don't know the rules, mate." But Bates has resorted to mind games. "Here we go Andy, right here," he says after a Ram double fault. Then when Ram misses a first serve, Bates shows his delight again. It nearly works too - but Murray sqaunders a 30-0 lead.

Murray 2-6 4-6 2-1 Ram
Ram impresses the crowd with a bit of keepy-uppy, a measure of how relaxed he is feeling. Murray powers a backhand hopelessly wide, giving the Israeli a break point, but luckily for the Brit, Ram can't take it.

Murray 2-6 4-6 1-1 Ram
Israel captain Eyal Ran is sitting back in his chair, looking very pleased with himself, and who can blame him? Maybe he knows Murray has never won a match from two sets down.

Murray 2-6 4-6 1-0 Ram
Here we go then. Murray only needs another 17 games and it's in the bag.

Second set

"If any kids are watching this, I hope they're not looking at Andy Murray as a role model."
BBC commentator David Mercer.

Murray 2-6 4-6 Ram
Ram seals his two-set lead with an ace. Murray looks like he's not really interested today. Perhaps he, like the rest of the world, is not that enamoured with a Davis Cup Europe/Africa Zone Group One First Round Play-Off.

Murray 2-6 4-5 Ram
Murray can mutter all he likes about the slippery baseline but it won't mention that in the scoreline if he loses - and he is now in real danger of suffering defeat to a man who has played one singles tournament all year. "Quite extraordinary," says John Lloyd. Indeed.

Murray 2-6 4-4 Ram
Here we go again. Murray complains to the umpire about a cameraman moving during a point. The umpire accuses Murray of using a "bad word", which Murray and Bates fiercely deny. It doesn't help Murray's black mood and he loses the game to love.

"In this situation, you've got to go back to basics. Murray's got to get the ball deep and keep pounding on Ram until he starts making errors. You can't keep giving away freebies, as Murray is doing."
BBC analyst John Lloyd

Murray 2-6 4-3 Ram
Murray is moaning about the baseline being too slippery now. He'll be running out of excuses soon and we're only in the second set. The teenager has to face deuce again but digs himself out of trouble with a decent serve.

Murray 2-6 3-3 Ram
Bates does his best to encourage Murray during the changeover. It looks like he's talking to a brick wall though. Ram races into a 40-0 lead. Murray does get it back to 40-30 but that's as good as it gets.

Murray 2-6 3-2 Ram
Lucky Murray. On a first break point, he puts a drop volley too close to Ram but guesses right and puts away the Israeli's attempted pass. Murray survives but it's not pretty.

Murray 2-6 2-2 Ram
Murray seems to have remembered this is actually a match, pumping his fist as a passing shot gets him to 30-30. Then he plays an awful point and it's as you were.

Murray 2-6 2-1 Ram
That's more like it. Murray constructs his best point of the day to take him to 40-0. He loses the next two points but a good first serve wins him the game. "Great serve, great serve, great serve," says Jeremy Bates. The poor man is clinging to any scrap of comfort at the moment.

Murray 2-6 1-1 Ram
Easy for Ram - a love game. A wag in the crowd calls out: "Murray, you do know we are losing?" Not sure he does to be honest.

Murray 2-6 1-0 Ram
Well at least Murray has stopped the rot. The crowd is very quiet - and not just because this is Eastbourne, and much of the support is, shall we say, of the sort of age which requires afternoon naps.

First set

"Andy Murray is making Andy Ram look good. Murray hasn't come to the table to play a Davis Cup match. He's very casual. He just gave that set away. He needs to do a very quick about-turn now, otherwise Ram is going to get more and more confident."
BBC analyst John Lloyd

Murray 2-6 Ram
Judy Murray can barely disguise her disgust as she looks on, and you can't blame her. Murray is doing the full 'Kevin the Teenager' act today. A Ram drop shot gives Israel the first set and even they look a bit surprised at this turn of events.

Murray 2-5 Ram
This is a disaster. There's nothing more to say. Murray is still moaning about the noise from the cameras.

Murray 2-4 Ram
This is a bit embarrassing for Murray, the only world-class singles player on show this weekend. He gets to 30-0 but no further as Ram continues on his merry way.

Murray 2-3 Ram
Ram hasn't read the Eastbourne script. He earns himself another two break points against the British wonderkid and this time, Murray crumbles. Jeremy Bates is complaining about the sound of the cameras when Murray hits a shot - the British camp is clearly getting desperate.

Murray 2-2 Ram
This is not the kind of barnstorming start this crowd needed after the Bogdanovic horror show. Murray can't buy a return as Ram holds to love.

Murray 2-1 Ram
Murray waves his hand in front of his face but the ballgirl doesn't seem to understand the international sign for 'Can I have my towel please?' It's just part of a frustrating game for Murray who faces a break point against the world number 662. He saves it though.

Murray 1-1 Ram
Ram makes his intentions clear, serve-volleying from the word go. He hold to 15.

Murray 1-0 Ram
Murray looks like being another Bogdanovic as he double-faults to go 30-15 down, but he steels himself and a couple of unreturnable serves get him off to a solid start.

Build-up

"Interesting this match. I saw Andy Murray lose to Justin Gimelstob in Newport last week. Gimelstob chipped and charged and Murray struggled. Andy Ram isn't as good as Gimelstob but it will be interesting to see if he comes at him and how Murray reacts."
BBC analyst John Llloyd

1544 BST: Murray's on court, accompanied, as Bogdanovic was, by 'Let's get it started' by the Black-Eyed Peas. Seems a bit more appropriate for the fiery Scot though.

1541 BST: Time for Andy Murray to start a one-man rescue job for Britain after a dispiriting defeat for Alex Bogdanovic earlier. Murray faces world number 662 Andy Ram - who is probably better than his ranking suggests. Ram is a doubles specialist fresh from mixed doubles glory with Vera Zvonareva at Wimbledon.
