Gilbert is not a man known for dressing smartly

Tennis coach Brad Gilbert was among those to bag himself a coveted Centre Court ticket for the men's final on Sunday.

Gilbert is usually a pretty casual dresser, so it was a surprise to see him in a smart grey suit (although he was still wearing his shades).

Maybe he was trying to impress the Lawn Tennis Association, which is rumoured to be prepared to pay up to �500,000 a year for his services.

Part of his role would be to coach British teenager Andy Murray.

Remember when Darren Gough was known as one of England's most dangerous fast bowlers?

Well, not any more.

The Yorkshireman was at Wimbledon with fellow quickie Simon Jones on Sunday and one little boy wondered why the pair were attracting so much attention.

His mum informed him that Gough was "that one that won Strictly Come Dancing".

Rafael Nadal: small feet, big heart

As Rafael Nadal warmed up in front of a packed crowd ahead of Sunday's final, Diary overheard a surprising exchange among the fans.

"Hasn't he got small feet?" pondered one.

"Hmm... just like Chris Evert," responded the other.

Meanwhile, Roger Federer's 61-year-old coach Tony Roche was serving from two feet inside the baseline to give the world number one a challenge.

But the Swiss mister was still swatting away his returns with consummate ease, while signing autographs with his left hand.

(That last bit's not true actually, but Diary imagines he could have done if he'd wanted to)

"Psst... any chance you're free in August?"

Doubles world number one Bob Bryan has got himself into a bit of pickle involving two former Wimbledon champions.

The American, who was crowned Wimbledon champion with brother Mike on Saturday, partnered Venus Williams in the mixed event.

The pair reached the final, and Venus was keen to reprise the partnership at the US Open in August, but it turns out Bob's double-booked, leaving brother Mike to come to his rescue.

"I'm committed to play with Martina Navratilova for her last Grand Slam at the Open," said Bob.

"Venus asked me the other day to play the Open, and so they'll probably have to slide her over to Mike."

As one journalist pointed out, it's "worse than prom dates".

Diary has been made aware that hundreds of TV viewers are intrigued to find out who the elderly gentleman is who sits day after day in the players' box on Centre Court.

He has been described as, distinguished, a Colonel Custer or Colonel Sanders look-alike and Goran Ivanisevic's father amongst many others.

But Diary can put your minds at rest by revealing that is it Honorary Steward David Spearing whose job is to look after the players' family and friends.
